Policies and Frequently Asked Questions

Snow/Inclement Weather

We do not expect our volunteers to endanger themselves to come out and wrap. If the mall closes (this is extremely rare) we will call to notify all wrappers. If you hear the mall has closed and have not heard from us, please reach out to us via email (wrappingupcancerny@gmail.com). If you cannot make it to your shift due to weather please let Nick know ASAP.

Parking

The malls are obviously very busy during the holiday season. Please give yourself plenty of time to park and get to the wrapping station. For Colonie Center we suggest parking near Macy's. At Crossgates we are awaiting finalized location information, details will be shared soon. Please plan to arrive about 10-15 minutes before your shift is scheduled to begin to ease the transition between volunteers.

In Need of ACS services

Many shoppers stop by the table to share about their experience with cancer. If anyone indicates they need support from the American Cancer Society please encourage them to call 1-800-227-2345. This number also appears on signs/business cards throughout the wrap area.

Donation Amount

There is not a set price for wrapping. We encourage shoppers to donate whatever they feel comfortable, but many people donate 5-20% of the value of the gift(s).

Payment Types

We are able to accept cash, check (made out to the American Cancer Society) and credit card donations.

The American Cancer Society no longer uses credit card machines, so we will be using the square app to accept credit card donations

Receipts

The ACS does not generally issue receipts for cash donations. If someone feels strongly about receiving a receipt, encourage them to make a credit card or check donation (once the check is cashed the donor will receive a receipt in the mail).

Poor Wrappers

It is our expectation that all volunteers know how to wrap gifts, however skill levels may vary. No volunteer should critique the skills of others. If you feel comfortable, you can offer some respectful positive coaching. You may also suggest that challenged wrappers help by packing clothing, measuring paper, organizing supplies etc.

Gift/Package Limit

We have a limit of 12 gifts wrapped per customer. Please encourage customers to return at a different time if they have more to be wrapped. If you choose to wrap more than 12 gifts for a customer (i.e. when it is very quiet at the mall), please make it very clear to the customer that you are making an exception so they do not return expecting to have many gifts wrapped on a different day.

Soliciting

We cannot solicit. It is ok to ask shoppers if they want gifts wrapped, but we should remain behind the table. Other groups cannot stand near the gift wrap station and hand out materials. Please do not allow any coupons or flyers to be placed on the gift wrap tables without ACS approval.
