India has a rich and long heritage in probability theory and stochastic processes, with Indian researchers contributing significantly to the area, both within the country and abroad. To further this growth, it is important to expose young research scholars in India to recent developments and techniques in the field.
The annual Lectures in Probability and Stochastic Processes (LPS), running since 2006, has long served this purpose through two mini-courses by experts on contemporary topics. From 2027 onwards, we intend to complement this by the Workshop in Probability and Statistics (WPS).
The workshop will feature two mini-courses on topics of current interest in probability, statistics and their intersections with theoretical computer science. These courses will be aimed at advanced graduate students and researchers. At the end of the workshop, there will be a 2-day conference with 5-6 complementary research level talks and discussion sessions aimed at exposing participants to current research topics and open problems. The conference will feature a mix of Indian and international speakers, with a slight emphasis on participants from the Asia–Pacific region.
With this added research focus, WPS also aims to add to the vibrant landscape of probability events in India — and especially in Bangalore, which has hosted a steady stream of workshops, schools, and lecture series in probability over the past decade.
