ENDURANCE SERIES:
The annual ‘8 Hour’ is the longest running event on the Killarney International Raceway calendar. The race takes place on the tortuously twisty Karting circuit, with 13 corners in just one kilometer
It started in 1982 as a 2 hour endurance for 50cc two-stroke machines.
Conceived as an experiment to see whether these modified two-strokes could stand up to being run long enough for pit stops, strategy and pace to become a factor, it was a great way for riders to test the mechanical soundness of their machines, as well as their own stamina and abilities.
The machines proved their reliability and very soon the race became a two hour sprint; the only strategic element was how to make the compulsory pit stops as quick as possible. Over time it grew to be a 3hr, 4hr, 6hr and eventually the current 8hr format.
With the advent of superb high-tech 150cc single-cylinder 4-stroke engines in motorcycles, these machine have mostly taken over from the more temperamental two-strokes in recent years, although a few die-hard ‘smokers’ are still entered each year.
125cc 4-stroke motorcycles are now also eligible to partake in the Endurance events.
Since 2022 the WPMC Short Circuit Committee has started an Endurance Series, which consists of 3-4 Endurance races throughout the year, culminating in the 8hr.
This gives riders a chance to perfect their skills and practice their pit stops before the 8hr in December.
The 43rd running of this Iconic event will take place on the 14th December 2025 at the Killarney International Raceway.
