FAQs

Do I need to know how to sail to join the team?

No. We offer a learn to sail class.

What if I can't make practices because of my schedule?

Generally, if you have a reoccurring conflict with practice, we do not recommend taking sailing for PE credit. However, please join the club and come when you are able. You must attend at least one practice each year before taking out a boat independently and to be considered a member in good standing.

If you already know how to sail and are willing to attend a combination of lts and racing practices, contact exec about whether it would be possible to get gym credit.

When can I take a boat out?

We have access to the sailboats at Regatta Point when they are open and the boats are not being used for another class. However, you must attend at least one practice and let exec know before taking out a boat.

What equipment do I need?

If you are a beginner, you should not worry about buying specific sailing gear. It can be expensive. If you enjoy sailing, we recommend buying a life jacket that feels comfortable, but we have some available to borrow. To sail, we require closed-toe shoes (like sandals or sneakers, not flip flops) that can get wet and layers as fall gets colder. We will sail in light rain.

For more experienced sailors, we will sail unless there is lightning. Be prepared for colder weather, we can attend regattas through the end of October. Spray or foul-weather gear, a layer or two to put under it, and sailing boots are recommended for the second half of the season. Please, bring your life jacket from home so we have enough for beginners.

Do you go to regattas?

Yes, we attend 3-6 regattas each fall, usually in the Boston area. We are part of the NEISA conference.

What boats do you sail?

We race 420's, our learn to sail program uses hunters.
