WPI Mathematical Sciences
Awards & Commencement

The WPI Mathematical Sciences Department presented our annual awards Tuesday, May 19th at 10:45 AM (EDT) to be followed at 11:00 AM with a ceremony for our 2020 Mathematical Sciences graduates.

Our Commencement Speaker was WPI's Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Professor of Mathematical Sciences Dr. Arthur C. Heinricher
As dean, he is responsible for ensuring the quality and effectiveness of all aspects of the undergraduate experience at WPI.

Dean Heinricher was one of the four recipients of the 2016 Bernard M. Gordon Prize for Innovation in Engineering and Technology Education that was awarded to WPI “for a project-based engineering curriculum developing leadership, innovative problem-solving, interdisciplinary collaboration, and global competencies.” He is also the recipient of the 2018 Denise Nicoletti Trustees' Award for Service to Community. Heinricher has worked selflessly to improve the quality of education at WPI and to continually measure its success through outcomes assessment, which he views as positive mechanisms for continuous improvement of higher education, according to his award citation.

Joining WPI in 1992 as a faculty member in Mathematical Sciences, his teaching focused on first and second year students and advising students’ IQPs and MQPs. In 1996, he was awarded the Harold J. Gay Professorship in Mathematics, which recognizes younger faculty members who have demonstrated potential for achievement in mathematics research. He served as director of the university's Center for Industrial Mathematics and Statistics and, from 1998 to 2006, he co-directed WPI’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program in Industrial Mathematics and Statistics.
