As of now, all marks from the PIAA State Championship Meet are included in the AAA honor roll and incorporated into the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 List. If you have any marks that will alter the final rankings, please submit them to me as soon as possible.
Without a doubt, the worst year this millennium for AAA at states and possibly the worst year ever since the PIAA went to eight medals from six. But to their defense, the absence of Brianna Schwartz and Maddie Holmberg really hurt AAA. Total medal count was only 16, the next lowest this millennium was the 23 total medals earned in 2001.
Two gold medals were won and both with great marks. Home-schooled junior, Madeleine Davison, representing North Allegheny, garnered gold in the 3200 meter run with an excellent 10:27.20, the third best time in WPIAL history. And to no one's surprise, Madison Wiltrout, the sophomore phenom from Connellsville, easily claimed her second straight PIAA title in the javelin with a PIAA meet record toss of 182-8. Two weeks earlier, at the Central AAA Qualifier, Madison set a National High School Record with a gigantic 185-8, obviously also the best throw ever by a WPIAL competitor.
AAA also captured two silver medallions this past weekend. Latrobe senior Maddy Mueseler came up 17 hundredths of a second short of winning the 300 meter hurdles, but her great time of 42.42 not only earned her a spot on the National Federation Honor Roll, but also the number 1 mark on the All-TIme WPIAL Top 25 List. Also coming up a tad short of winning a gold medal was Lauren George. The Hempfield senior turned in a season best long jump of 18-2¾, but lost out of first place by ¼ inch. With a 2014 jump of 18-7½, Lauren leaves high school as the 12th best long jumper in WPIAL history.
There were three bronze medal winning performances at Shippensburg by AAA and two of them were turned in by Kat Quigley. The Pine-Richland senior captured third place in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles. With her 42.78 in the 300 finals, she leaves high school with the third best time in WPIAL annals. Kat's 2014 time of 14.4 in the 100 hurdles puts her in a tie for 11th place on the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 List. The third AAA bronze medal was earned by Mt. Lebanon's Kelsey Potts. The Lebo junior turned in a season best National Federation Honor Roll time of 4:51.38. Kelsey, who has a career best time of 4:50.13, will enter her senior season as the third fastest miler in WPIAL history.
Also of note from the PIAA meet, four AAA girls produced marks that either moved them up or into the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 rankings. In the 800 meter run, 4th place finisher, Alexis O'Shea of West Allegheny, moved into the 7th spot on the all-time list with her 2:12.20 while Mt. Lebanon's Claire Dougherty's 5th place finish time of 2:12.71 lands her in the 9th slot on the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 List. In the triple jump, junior Chandler Killins of West Mifflin produced a leap of 38-3¼, the longest in the WPIAL this year, to capture a 4th place medal and move her to 18th on the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 rankings. Although just missing out on a medal, Canon-McMillan's Haley Yenchik vaulted 11-6 to move into a tie for 17th place on the All-Time WPIAL Top 25 pole vault chart.
As for team scoring, Mt. Lebanon was the highest placing WPIAL school as the Blue Devils finished 11th with 14 points.
