Topic: Caught between abstraction and reality
Abstract: Personal events in my weird trajectory in life have led me to attempt a career that is simultaneously pure and applied mathematics. I believe that mathematicians have an obligation to try to solve real-world problems and, more importantly, to train students who can be gainfully employed. But I also believe that we have barely scratched the surface of applicable mathematics. I believe that we can never know too much pure math for the problems that vex us. So the question is how far we can reach one hand into the applications and, simultaneously, the other into deeper theory without tearing ourselves apart. Without going into much detail, I’ll give a few examples. Then I will be happy to answer questions about navigating graduate school and about life as a mathematician.
