It happens to the best of us...
The novice hiker, in his fancy shoes with leather soles, slips on a wet rock. He reaches his hand out to break his fall, and impales his arm on a nearby branch. He howls in pain as he clutches his wound, which has a gigantic laceration, with splinters of wood sticking out. What to do next?
The Wilderness Medicine Society selected a panel of experts in 2014 to review current evidence on different aspects of wilderness wound care. Using existing evidence, they developed a set of guidelines for the management of wounds sustained in austere environments. A summarized list is provided here:
