The concept is simple.
You must pick the winner of each event.
If the events have finals, grand finals or a final series, you must pick the overall winner and/or series result of that event.
If the event doesn’t have finals, you must pick the team that is deemed champion at the completion of that event.
For individual events it is the person who is deemed the winner by that sporting code or organisation of that event.
The World Tipping Competition consists of the following competitions:
World Tipping Competition (also referred to as the Main Competition)
Big 3 Side Leagues (also referred to as the Big 3 Side Competitions)
Last Punter Standing (LPS)
WTC Champions League
The World Tipping Competition (also referred to as the Main Competition) is the flagship of the WTC.
It consists of all events chosen by the WTC Committee from a wide range of sports.
Tips are submitted by the end of the first week of January each year for the forthcoming competition (the actual date can change year on year). Once submitted, selections may be changed up to the commencement of the first event, at which point they are locked in and the tips shared with all punters.
The Main Competition forms the basline for all of the Side Competitions, which use the same tip selections as the Main Competition.
Punters cannot enter any of the Side Competitions without also entering the Main Competition.
The Big 3 is an optional add-on competition. To enter the Big 3 you will have to pay an extra enry fee which will go towards prize money for the Big 3.
You cannot enter the Big 3 without entering the Main Competition.
The Big 3 consists of 3 "side leagues" run throughout the year. The person with the most correct tips the across the stated events will win the prize money for that competition.
Each of the Big 3 side leagues are scored separately based on your tips for the main WTC competition. Each Side League consists of all events from the 2 sports in the name of the Side League.
The 3 Side Leagues are:
Soccer/Cricket - All male and female soccer and cricket events in the main WTC competition
AFL/Rugby - All male and female AFL and rugby events in the main WTC competition
Tennis/Golf - All male and female golf and tennis events in the main WTC competition
You cannot enter one of the Big 3 side leagues by itself - you must enter all 3.
A note for the purists out there:
T20 is considered to be cricket for the purposes of the Cricket/Soccer Big 3
Rugby League is considered to be rugby for the purposes of the AFL/Rugby Big 3.
The Last Punter Standing is an optional side competition, in which we have chosen 12 events, 1 per month. To remain alive you must get the tip correct. If no one gets an event correct, all punters alive at the start of the month roll over to the next month/event.
The events chosen have the least number of possible winners so we should be able to get right through the year.
This is the only WTC event that will not be decided by countback. If we have multiple punters remaining after the last event, all remaining punters will split the prize money. Prize money for a single winner will be 100% of the prize pool (no 2nd/3rd place prizes).
The list of Last Punter Standing events can be found in the entry form, in the "Entry Type" question on the first page. It will also be on the LPS leaderboard page.
A new side competition being trialled in 2026, open to all former champions (winners of the Main Competition).
The general structure of the WTC Champions League is that it will be scored in the same way As the Main Competition, but will only be open toto Champions, who will each choose 6 events to be part of the competition.
Countbacks or other methods used to declare a winner
If any event is decided by countback or other methods to determine an actual winner (e.g. the 2019 ODI Cricket World Cup) the team/individual who is deemed the winner by that sporting code or organisation will be awarded a point in the WTC.
Drawn Events
In the circumstance of a drawn event, awarding points will depend on whether a draw could have been selected. For example, if the Cambridge vs Oxford Boat Race is a draw and you did not select "Draw", you will not be awarded a point. However, if two players end the season tied for events like the Dally M Medal, Brownlow Medal, Coleman Medal, etc, both selections will be eligible for a point.
Disqualifications
In the event of a disqualification of a team/individual in the days, weeks or months after the event, the leaderboard will be updated to the new winner. If the prize money has already been paid out by the WTC, the original result will stand.
WTC Committee
The WTC Committee will decide who is deemed the winner of each event based on the criteria above and no appeals will be lodged after the decision is finalised.
Simple and fair
1 correct tip = 1 point
Every event counts toward your total score
Bonus Points
There are three ways to boost your score:
Competition wide DOUBLE points: these are two events chosen each year for which correct tips will be awarded 2 points instead of the usual 1. The two competition wide events are the US Masters Golf and AFL Grand Final. Think of these are our jokers.
Personal DOUBLE point event: in addition to the competition wide Double Point Events, each punter will select an event which will become their personal Double Point Event. If they tip this event correctly they will receive 2 points for that event instead of the usual 1. The competition wide Double Point Events are ineligible for selection as a personal Double Point Event. Think of this as your joker.
All solo tips that are correct are awarded a SOLO point. i.e If you are the only person to correctly pick an event you will be awarded 2 points instead of the usual 1 point.
Each of the Big 3 Side Leagues are scored separately, using the same selections as for the main World Tipping Competition.
There are no double, solo or bonus points for the Big 3 Side Leagues - only winning tips count for points (and runners-up for tiebreaks).
The Last Punter Standing is scored as a standalone competition using the same selections as for the main World Tipping Competition.
Only correct tips are scored. At the conclusion of each event, a punter is either still active (if every tip in the LPS so far has been correct), or eliminated. The last active punter is the winner of the LPS.
If scores are level at the end, ties are broken ininan the following order:
Runner-up Picks
If there are two or more people on the same score at the completion of all the events, a count back on who has the most selections that came second will be counted to find the overall winner of the WTC. Events that will not be counted in the second place count are:
Any event that doesn’t display a second place for public knowledge
Any event that only has two teams/individuals i.e. cricket series, State of Origin, The Boat Race, President’s Cup etc
The Ranfurly Shield (New Zealand Rugby)
Any event with a category tip, where the same pick is first and second. For example, the Grand National horse race tip is for the country of origin of the winning horse. If horses from The same country finish first and second, no runner-up picks will be counted
Countback
If punters are still tied, events later in the year are weighted more heavily.
This means that if 2 or more people are still tied after runners-up points, the person who scored the most recent point will be deemed to be ahead, to reward correct tips made further into the future.
People who were equal first who drop down to second will be awarded the second place prize money. There will also be a count back for 2nd and 3rd place.
100% of entry fees are paid out as prize money.
No cuts, no fees for the WTC Committee - we’re in it purely for the love of sport.
$60 per entrant.
WTC Champion takes 70% of the total pot (minus the cost of a championship ring).
20% to second place.
10% to third place.
$30 entry fee ($10 allocated to each side league).
The winner of each of the Big 3 Side Leagues will be awarded 1/3 of the prize money (no 2nd/3rd place prizes).
If two or more punters are eqully placed after tiebreaks have been applied, the prize pool will be split equally between them.
$10 entry fee.
Winner takes all.
If more than one punter is still standing after all events are run, the prize money is split equally between all remaining punters.
This competition is still being tested with no entry fee or prize money.
For the Grand National, country of origin means where it was born, NOT where it trains.
The leading test match run scorer is for the calendar year.
