Hello! Here it is. That’s the cover of my new book, World Within a Song, which comes out in November. My THIRD book!1 Who’d a thunk it. Take it in. Get a load of it. I know I’ve talked about it and linked to the online listing before, but I think now is a good time to tell you about what’s inside. It’s a book where I revel in the personal stories and emotions that have been absorbed into 50 songs by other artists. Interspersed throughout I’ve included my Pulitzer-adjacent Rememories, some originally published on Starship Casual, some new.

So… Why am I writing this book now? To quote from the book’s introduction, the truth is, I should’ve written this book first, and I would have if I’d had any wherewithal and confidence from the get-go. This book is the one I probably would have written first if I were more ambitious, and if I had been a little more clear-eyed about what I care most for in this world, and what I’ve thought about the most by far. Other people’s songs. And how much they have taught me about how to be human—how to think about myself and others. And how deeply personal and universally vast the experience of listening to almost anything with intent and openness can be.

And how did I come up with the particular list of songs in the book? I could have easily chosen a thousand other songs to write about. And having finished that book, I would regret the omission of a thousand other songs. Those in World Within a Song are just those that came to me first. Besides, the specifics of the songs themselves isn’t really the point. What’s important to me to convey is how miraculous songs are. It doesn’t matter how many people hear “A Day in the Life”—there is only one version that belongs to you. Mine has little to do with yours. Our appraisals might align but I doubt your relationship to the song includes a memory of waiting for doors to open at an all-ages Jodie Foster’s Army concert on Laclede’s Landing in St. Louis. With a flooding Mississippi River raging down Wharf St. and heaving up onto the steps of the Gateway Arch. Mind melting down on mushrooms watching a husband and wife duo sing “A Day in the Life” while their toddler does laps around you keeping shockingly good time on a tambourine.

1990 / June 19: Uncle Tupelo’s No Depression is released on Rockville Records and the band appears on KWUR in St. Louis to play songs from the album live. That night they perform at Cicero’s Basement Bar for the first night of a two-night record release party. The Hilltops open.

Savage (Songs from a Broken World) is a concept album centered around the blending of Western and Eastern cultures in a post-apocalyptic world that has become desertified as a result of global warming. "The songs are about the things that people do in such a harsh and terrifying environment," Numan stated in an interview. "It's about a desperate need to survive and they do awful things in order to do so, and some are haunted by what they've done. That desire to be forgiven, along with some discovered remnants of an old religious book, ultimately encourages religion to resurface, and it really goes downhill from there."[6]

"When the world comes apart" is a line from the 1994 Sacrifice song "Magic", and "Mercy" (appearing on the album proper) was an early demo title during the 2006 Jagged sessions, which would eventually become "We Are the Lost" from Dead Son Rising.[citation needed]

Please forgive the proud Dad in me but this is a clip of Persia and Echo singing the "If I Said" piano demo. I'd just finished the lyric and they had just that minute come home from school. They didn't really know the tune at all so it's a little wayward in places. They are both dyslexic, so them reading it at all was enough to make me watery-eyed, but having your own children sing one of your new songs is about as special as it gets.[citation needed]

Music is one of the most powerful forces known to the world throughout history. It inspires us to be passionate, to love, and to believe that anything can be possible. In honor of World Day of Peace, here's a list of some of the most iconic songs that celebrate the essence and importance of peace.

Mindlab International, specialists in neuroscience and consumer behavior, assembled a group of 40 participants, asking them to solve challenging puzzles, while monitoring their physiological responses as they listened to 10 different songs. Weightless outperformed all other tested songs, reducing stress and anxiety levels by an impressive 65 percent.

In one of the most poignant songs about the world, Jackson tells us that although we know we could make the planet a better place for our children, it takes effort. Jackson hoped his music would inspire people to do good.

Get ready to embark on a musical journey presented by Choate students in the Gelb Theater this fall. Written and composed by three-time Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown, Songs For A New World (Songs) consists of 17 songs, no dialogue, and no concrete plot; instead, a series of individual stories are presented, following themes of love, loss, rebirth, and reconnection.

Music is one way to get a message out or to encourage support for a cause, especially during wartime. In the first years of World War I, when the United States was neutral, songs supported the country staying out of the war. After the U.S. entered the war in 1917, songs encouraged or discouraged citizens to enlist and join the battle. Others encouraged those on the home front to support those who were on the battlefield.

Many of the songs in Songs for a New World deal with relationships between people. Why do you think person-to-person moments are so impactful in the face of change and discovery?

[Writer] Marsha Norman always says that every playwright really only has one story to tell, and they spend their lives telling it over and over in different costumes. I think part of my story is about finding a community, locating a place in the world that feels like home and people that feel like family.

I saw the show on Wednesday

I thoroughly enjoyed the show. The music and songs are brilliant and the whole ensemble was great and must have worked really hard on the production.

The standout had to be the female lead who sung Another step (Murray) and The moon and Stars. Amazing vocal talent and the performance had the right amounts of comedy and seriousness to poryray the feel of each song. Another step was my Favourite.

Shout-out to the orchestra too!

The live band was lively and added to the show...The female leads were excellent the lead on the Wednesday show engaged more with the audience and her vocals were spot on judging by the audience's response to her songs. The male leads started well one seemed to sing in the wrong key.

I enjoyed the show, and a huge well done to all involved is worth seeing...

I really enjoyed this show Monday evening. It is clear that a large amount of work and effort has gone into this production, a few kinks here and there although I am sure this will be smoothed out later in their run.

I wish I knew the names of the songs to note, however special commendations must go to both of the female principles for excellent performances! The performance also featured a huge band for a fringe production, who also sounded great, so high praise to them.

A really enjoyable evening for any musical fans!
