Discrete and Continuum Modeling

of Natural Systems

May 29th through June 3th, 2022

Workshop

at MASSERIA SALAMINA, Fasano Italy

The mathematical description of the behavior of natural materials is far more challenging than that for engineered materials because of the variability of their material properties and the difficulty of testing predictions against natural phenomena. This is particularly true for geophysical flows of sediments, sand, foams, rock debris and snow.

We propose a meeting of senior experts, both in the development of mathematical theories to describe such phenomena, and in the discrete numerical simulations that can be employed to test them. The senior speakers will be invited to review their scientific experiences in the field before an audience of invited participants and junior colleagues, nominated by the invited participants. Shorter presentations will also be made by these junior colleagues.
