Four airports - Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Cologne/Bonn and Münster/Osnabrück - are within a reasonable distance of Dortmund. The ones in Dortmund and Düsseldorf are more conveniently reachable, though, both having direct connections via public transport. From Dortmund Airport to Dortmund Central Station it is a 25 mins journey going once every hour and from Düsseldorf Airport it is about 45 mins with 4-5 available trains every hour. From Cologne/Bonn and Münster/Osnabrück it takes about 1.5-2 hours and you have to change trains/busses.
Getting from Dortmund Airport to Dortmund Central Station (Hauptbahnhof)
The AirportExpress operates between Dortmund Central Station and the airport terminal during airport opening hours about once every hour. The journey time is about 25 minutes (non-stop).
The stop for the AirportExpress service is located directly on the Central Station forecourt (Königswall/City exit) near the taxi rank.
The fare is €10.00 for a single ticket. Tickets can be purchased from the bus driver (cash payment only), as well as from a ticket machine in front of the terminal (cash payment (notes and coins) and cashless payment with EC card, credit card possible). To save time when boarding the bus, they recommend buying tickets at the ticket machine.
Here is the schedule: AirportExpress timetable.
Getting from Düsseldorf Airport to Bochum Hauptbahnhof
Upon arriving at the airport follow the signs to the DB (Deutsche Bahn) train station. Buy your train ticket to Dortmund (ICE-ticket or RE-ticket with Preisstufe D) at the airport before boarding the Skytrain, which takes you to the train station. There are trains travelling directly to Dortmund Hauptbahnhof frequently and the trip takes about 45 to 55 minutes depending on which train you take. With the RE-ticket Preisstufe D provided by the public transportation system VRR you can take any of the regional trains and S-Bahn. If you take an ICE, IC or EC you need a specific ticket for one of these trains.
Take a look at this website for a suitable connection from "Düsseldorf Flughafen" to "Dortmund Hbf".
