Working with Underserved Youth
An Art for the Journey Volunteer Training Program
An Art for the Journey Volunteer Training Program
This training is designed to prepare you for many aspects of your volunteer experience: supporting art instruction, working with young students, managing classroom behaviors, addressing challenging emotions, building meaningful relationships, and responding to cultural and/or trauma-related needs. The course is divided into 6 sections, so you can complete it in one sitting, or take it one module at a time.
In each module, you'll watch short videos to learn about a topic that's relevant to our work in the art classroom or to the community we serve.
You'll then complete a post-module questionnaire to check your understanding. (Your responses will be checked for completion, not for accuracy. If you're still feeling unsure about a topic or want to learn more, we'll be happy to talk with you about it!)
Instructions:
Click on the slides below to view each video. You can watch the videos on this page, or click the arrow that appears at the top-right of the slide to pop the video out into a new browser tab.
Once you've watched all the videos for a given module, click the "Module Questionnaire" button on the right. (This will open a Google Form.)
You will receive credit for completing the Volunteer Training once you submit all 6 post-module questionnaires.

We highly recommend that all volunteers watch the documentary HEARD, linked here. This film was produced by VPM PBS in 2020, in the neighborhoods surrounding Anna Julia Cooper School. It will teach you about the community that our students live in and come from, help you understand their lived experiences, and foster an appreciation for their behaviors, actions, and beliefs.
"HEARD captures the inspiring stories of five people who grew up in 'the projects,' surviving and thriving in spite of, and often because of, the challenges they've had to overcome. Now they’re giving back to their home communities, trying to make a better life for those who come behind." -VPM
