Our route
to and from the south:

Green: one overnight stay
Red: multiple overnight stays

Our route on Sardinia:

Our route on Corsica:

21.7. home sweet home

Finally, on the 93rd day - we're back home.

We stayed on 30 different overnight places and spend 5.500 km and 92 hours on the road.

We wanted to leave the hot weather behind, but it was 31° when we arrived. But like always in Bremen - rain was close ...

18.7. Freiburg

Like always we stopped in Freiburg to visit Sina and Moritz. We had some really hot days, so there was nothing else to do than swimming after a bike ride to a nice lake. In the evening we joined the "Agrikultur-Festival" with nice workshops and dancing in a silent-disco, that was fun.

15.7. brunnen

Brunnen was our intermediate stop in Switzerland and it is located at the eastern part of the lovely Lake Lucern (Vierwaldstätter See). After spending so long on the seashore it was a welcome change to stay some days at a lake between the high mountains of the Alps with nice, refreshing water.

14.7. st. gotthard

We avoid driving through long tunnels, so the way back north led us over the St. Gotthard Pass. This took us up on 2.100m instead of crossing the mountain range in a 16km long tunnel and over one hour waiting time before passing.

This circumstance resulted in some stunning views and much less stress for Sabine with her tunnel phobia.

13.7. ponte tresa

At the end of out trip there is another spot where we feel like coming home.

Ponte Tresa is a small village located at the border between Italy and Switzerland. The very old fashioned campsite "International" has a relaxed atmosphere and is located direct at the lake shore.

This time there was a big swiss-italian festival with huge fire works.

12.7. Lucca

Lucca is another place we already visited before, 10 years ago on a family vacation. Lucca is famous for its intact Renaissance-era city walls and its very well preserved historic center. Among other worth-visiting buildings there is a tower with trees on top and an elliptical square with has its base in a roman amphitheatre from the 1st century b.c.

On the old city wall is a wide bike path on which you can ride around the whole city.

Lucca is situated a the edge of the classical Tuscany area.

From our campsite we had a nice view into this landscape.

11.7. Ferry to italy

After an exhausting day leaving corsica with a delayed ferry trip we arrived late at night in the wonderful city of Lucca. Driving in darkness after a long time reminds us that some lights on our camper were broken and the next morning we got them fixed in a garage nearby.

10.7. leaving corsica

This was our 5th visit on this wonderful island which is so unique with its landscape of very high mountains and amazing coasts.

We will come back!

9.7. Waterfall bucatoggio / "kleiner Wasserfall"

Every time we are here on the east coast, a visit at one special waterfall is obligatory. In the early moring or late evening hours you are on your own and have a bath in the pond below the fall. It's magic!

8.7. olmello

Eight years ago we went on this campsite on the east coast on a family camp with "DLRG Bersenbrück". So there was another "coming home" feeling here. So few people here on the beach in high season - you can't imagine. So we had some relaxed last days on the island.

7.7. GR20

On our last day on the north coast Ulli wanted to hike at least a short part of the GR20 - the most famous hiking trail on Corsica, and one the the most difficult in Europa.

6.7. L’Île-Rousse

On the north coast of Corsica, a train is connecting various places. We took a half hour ride to L’Île-Rousse, another nice little village.

5.7. calvi on the rocks

But this week was also very noisy. Not only the airport of Calvi is right next door, but the electro festival "Calvi on the rocks" is also taking place in Calvi this weekend. It's one of the biggest open-air concerts in France. Although it's five kilometers away, we heared the beats of the DJs who played their songs until 4 a.m.

And Calvi is perhaps the place where you feel most like you're in France actually and not on a remote island like Corsica.
The fact that our SUP board was stolen on the beach today fits in with this. ;-(

4.7. calvi at night

Calvi has lots of beach bars which are very nice at night time for a Pastis or a Cap Corse, a local bitter aperitif.

3.7. Sunsets

Here in Corsicas north western part we had some of the most incredible sunsets of our trip.

2.7. dolce vita

Although we are in France, our campsite close to Calvi is called "Dolce Vita". Here we met another Sabine, a friend from Oldenburg who is on vacation for three weeks with eight teenagers. So we spent some nice days together and played more board games than usual.

1.7. Calvi

On the south end of Corsica Bonfazio is a real gem. On the opposite side of the island, here at the north west, Calvi is the equal counterpart.
An old town up a hill and a newer part with countless restaurants and shops down at the marina.

This pub sign is made of crown caps only.

29.6. Bodri

Bodri has a very nice beach, but just an average campsite, so we moved on ...

sardinia vs. corsica

Starting our trip with a week in the Provence, then staying seven weeks on Sardinia, we just finished our first week on Corsica and very soon the difference between the two Italian and French islands became obvious:

24.6. Solenzara

Solenzara is the name of a river and a small city at the mouth of the stream. Right here is the camp site "Côte de Nacres" located, which is probably our favorite one of the whole trip. We got a pitch right at the beach, the atmosphere is very tranquilly and there are two bars/restaurants only a stone's throw away.

After two days with thunderstorms we enjoyed the crystal clear water here four more days.

A 15km bike trip took us up the hills to some natural pools along the stream ...

22.6. Bonifacio

We spent a day and a night in the pittoresk town of Bonifacio, which resides on top of a rock plateau.. We've been here before twice, but never on an evening.

For us Bonfiacio is on the top list of worth-visiting ancient cities, together with Dubrovnik, Carcassone or Venice.

21.6. Capo testa

Before leaving the island we visited the famous peninsula "Capo Testa" with it's amazing rock landscape.

Of course we took a bath here, too.

And the fishes were exceptional fearless.

This was our last day on Sardinia - seven weeks "dolce vita".

We booked a one-hour ferry to cross the "Street of Bonfacio" from Sardinia to Corsica.

17.6. Vignola mare

Back at the northern coast of Sardinia, we stayed a few days at a small and simple tourist spot with nothing more than a few houses, three campsites, a market, some restaurants and a wonderful beach - all we need.

Shakerato with cornetti con
pistacchio and crema

15.6. agricamping

Close to Bosa we stayed one night on a Agri-Camping. Not located at the sea and very basic.

They sell their own products and offer traditional meals. So we had a 4-course fish menu in between dozens of cats who were happy with the rest of our dishes.

15.6. Bosa

Bosa on the west coast is called the "prettiest town on Sardinia" - and yes, it's very lovely. It's narrow alleys along side of the river Temo are very cute.

12.6. Is arutas

We went further north and skipped some parts of the western coast, arrived at a famous beach called "Is Arutas".
The sand is very white here with bigger grain size, just like rice grains.

We stayed five days directly at the beach and enjoyed a wonderful sunset every evening.
This place is so remote, we hav to take a 15km bike trip the reach the next small grocery store.

9.6. Sant' antioco

The island of Sant' Antioco is located in the south-western end of Sardinia. On a bike tour at the coast we were interrupted by a sheep herd. But not only the sheep, but also the cliffs here reminded us of Ireland.

7.6. cagliari

After spending so many days at the sea we missed srolling through narrow alleys of an old town. So we stayed one night in the capital of Sardinia: Cagliari.

We explored the city with our bikes, visited the anciant city centre, an incredible market and the botanical garden.

3.6. Capo ferrato

The Campsite of Capo Ferrato was recommended by many Sardinian travellers as their favorite. It's usually fully booked from April to November, but we made it to get  a three-day slot for a pitch.

The site is really nice, the sanitary facilities are the best we had since some extraordinary in Switzerland back in 2022. But it's also very expensive: 41 Euro for the both of us without electricity, in summer you pay close to 100 Euro for a small family per day.

Beside of the campsite, the beach is again shining in stunning turquoise and there is a small village close by with restaurants and grocery stores.

And after having some lonely overnight stays the last weeks it feels very crowded.

1.6. Cala Sinizias

Our first wild overnight stop was at Cala Sinizias, where we spent two nights. The parking spot was so close to the beach, we had breakfast there in the morning sun.

1.6. Punta Molentis

Another stop in the calm evening hours at the small beach of Punta Molentis. Another good spot for Ullis Handpan rehersal.

30.5. Ice cream surprise

Today we were suprised: the ice cream van of our favorite "Gelateria" appeared on our campsite. This made our day perfect!

29.5. Porto corallo

The lonesome Porto Corallo has nothing more that a very long beach, a lost marina and some restaurants.

The weather these days showed some very weird cloud constellations.

The small town Villaputzu is 6 km away from the sea but has a Gelateria with the best ice cream so far on Sardinia. So a bike trip every evening is obligatory.

27.5. a new working week

What is better than starting a working day with a cappucino and a "cornetto al pistacchio" at a beach bar?

26.5. Su sirbioni

Starting the sunday with a beach run and a refreshing swim session afterwards.

Later we took a nice bike trip to the beautiful beach "Su Sirbioni".

25.5. museddu

Today is a day with sunny and rainy parts, unfortunately they take place mostly on weekends. In Museddu there is another lonesome beach, no people at all.

23.5. la dolce vita

Together with France the food in Italy is probably the best! The bakery stuff is better in France, but the coffee and ice cream are way better in Italy.
We had some wonderful Pizza, Pasta, Fish and Meat in Restaurants and made some delicious dinners for ourselves. We had Breakfast an Picknick at the beach. And why not having a cocktail in a chilly bar after dinner?

20.5. santa maria navarrese

In Santa Maria Navarrese we are staying a few nights in a shady pine tree wood directly at the beach.

Ulli made his first hiking tour on this trip onto Monte Pittaine. It was quite exhausting, but what a fabulous view!

18.5. Arbatax

Meeting our friends from Bremen again in Arbatax, celebrating a birthday dinner with grilled fish.

15.5. santa lucia, our Sardinian "HOME"

Our first four vacations on Sardinia with our kids were 2009 - 2013. We visited various places, but each time we stopped in Santa Lucia on the east coast. It feels like coming home. If it's time, this is the place where Sabine wants a burial at sea.

Santa Lucia is not especially beautiful, but an absolute sweet, tranquil spot.

Our favorite cafe at the seafront is "La Conchiglia" in Santa Lucia, it opened just today.

13.5. Being on our own again

We had some wonderful days with Moritz and Sina, today they went back home.

11.5. san teodoro

The Beach of San Teodoro is caribeean style - and 5km long.

It's so nice to have some of our kids around us. And in San Teodoro we even met some friends from Bremen.

10.5. market

Refreshing our supplies with fresh vegetables, fruits and cheese. The "pecoriono al tartufo" (Truffels) is great!

9.5. Palau

An overnight stay at the small village of Palau, close to the famous island of Maddelena.

7.5. castelsardo and Valledoria

Having good food - one night fresh fish in Castelsardo, the other night pizza at the beach in Valledoria

5.5. welcome to sardinia

Sardinia says "Buon giorno" with slightly above 20°C and a cloudless sky. We found an amazing camp spot at the north coast close to the pictureesque village of Castelsardo. On this location in the front row at the sea shore we will spend the next days.

4.5. ESCAPing france

On the last day of our one week stay in Avignon we were joined by our son Moritz and his girl friend Sina, who want to spend their spring vacation with us.

Together we decided to escape the Provence autumn and take the ferry to Sardinia.

After an 11 hour ferry trip we arrived there with beautiful weather.

2.5. Avignon #2

Unfortunately it's still raining in the Provence. And we don't like to take rain photos. So instead some more impressions of this lovely city.

30.4. provence at its best

On a rain free evening we took a long bike ride through the wonderful Provence landscape.

28.4. Avignon

A day later it stopped raining and we had a first nice dinner outside!

Arriving in the Provence, we were welcomed with lots of rain. Meeting friends and having good food and drinks together let us forget the bad weather. Perhaps the name of the restaurant is an omen as to where we should go.

24.4. Freiburg

We usually spend the first week of a trip to southern Europe in Freiburg with our son Moritz and his girl friend Sina - and this time was no exception.

The frame does not represent the current temperature, it is just a restaurant called "Süden" ("South").

20.4. Takeoff

Unfortunately, it took a while to get fit again. After three surgeries, Ulli is healthy again and we are starting our spring trip exactly one year after our last spring trip to Ireland in 2023.

Due to the miserable weather over the last few months, we definitely want to go south. We'll just go as far south as we can until it's warm enough ;-)

1.3. Changing plans

"Life is what happens while you are making other plans." (John Lennon)

Due to Ulli's unplanned stay in hospital and a second surgery at the end of March we were forced to change our travel plans.

So we'll not starting our trip until Mid-April and the destination is open again ...

1.2. Preparing the trip

Skipping Scotland last year we originally want to catch that up this spring.
But after four awful winter months in Bremen we decided we need a warmer area.

So in March we will head south-west towards the iberian peninsula.
