Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
PROVERBS 4:23
Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”
1 CORINTHIANS 15:33
For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”
MATTHEW 18:20
Your faith is precious, you must protect it.
You faith is not automatic, it must be guarded.
Even good friendship can influence your walk with God, either strengthening or weakening it.
Think of your faith like a FIRE
When you surround it with the right environment, it burns stronger
but if you expose it to the wrong conditions, it slowly dies out
If you place a burning coal next to another coal, it stays hot.
but if you take it away and leave it alone, it cools off.
Example:
You may love God, but if your closest friend discourages prayers, mocks church, promotes sin, your faith will start cooling down without you even realizing it.
You faith doesn't usually die in a moment - it fades in an environment!
There are different types of people in your life:
Assignments (God-sent relationships)
Attachments (emotionally driven)
Distractions (enemy-influence)
David and Jonathan strengthen each other (1 Samuel 18)
Samson and Delilah led to spiritual downfall (Judges 16)
Imagine you're trying to climb a mountain (your walk with God)
A good friend pulls you up
A bad friends pulls you down
A neutral friend keeps you stuck
Example:
A godly friends says: Let's pray
A harmful friend says: It's not that serious
Everybody smiling with you is not strengthening you!
Protecting your faith does not mean cutting everyone off - but it does mean setting boundaries
2 CORINTHIANS 6:14
Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?
A filter vs. a sponge
a sponge absorbs everything
a filter lets in what's clean and blocks what's harmful
Your spirit should be a filter, not a sponge.
Example:
You can love your friend but refuse gossip, sinful activities, conversation that weaken your convictions.
You don't have to lose your friend - but you must not lose your faith!
God never intended for you to walk alone - He designed faith-building relationships
ECCLESIASTES 4:9-10
Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: 10 If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.
Think of two people holding a rope over a cliff - if one slips, the other keeps them from falling
That's what godly friendship looks like.
Example:
A faith-building friend reminds you of God's Word, corrects you in love,
encourages you in hard time, celebrates your spiritual growth.
If your circle doesn't push you toward God, it's pulling you away from Him.
Don't just look for godly friend - be one
HEBREWS 10:24-25
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
A mirror vs. a light:
a mirror only reflects
a light influences the whole room
be the friend who brings light into the relationship
Example:
Pray for your friends
Speak truth (even when it's uncomfortable)
Invite them closer to God
Stop asking "are they good for me? - ask, "am I leading them to God?"
Godly friends are not just "nice people to have around"
they are spiritual forces that can either strengthen or weaken your walk with God.
When they are truly God centered, they have a powerful, life-shaping effect on your faith.
THEY STRENGTHEN YOUR FAITH
They remind you of truth when your faith feels weak. When you doubt, they speak faith
When you're tired, they encourage endurance
When you feel like quitting, they lift your hands
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
If one falls, the other can help him up...
THEY PROTECT YOUR FAITH
They help guard your from sin, compromise, and spiritual drift
They call you out (with love)
They correct you when you're going the wrong way
They help you stay accountable
Proverbs 27:17
As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another
A real Godly friend would rather hurt your feelings for a moment than let your soul be destroyed
THEY IGNITE YOUR PASSION FOR GOD
You become like the people you spend time with
if they pray, you'll be stirred to pray
if they worship, you'll desire worship
if they hunger for God, it becomes contagious
Hebrews 10:24-25
Spur one another on toward love and good deeds...
THEY HELP YOU STAY ON THE RIGHT PATH
They keep you aligned with God's will
they give wise, biblical advise
they remind you of your calling
they help you make godly decisons
Proverbs 13:20
Walk with the wise and become wise...
THEY STAND WITH YOU IN BATTLES
When life hits hard, Godly friends don't disappear - they stand with you
They pray for you
They fight spiritually with you
They support you in your lowest moments
Galatians 6:2
Carry each other's burdens...
THEY SPEAK TRUTH, NOT JUST COMFORT
They don't just tell you what you want to hear - they tell you what you need to hear
They confront sin
They challenge your growth
They push you closer to Christ
Proverbs 27:6
Wounds from a friend can be trusted...
Guard what God gave you
Your faith is your lifeline - don't trade it for comfort, popularity, or unhealthy friendships
You faith is deeply connected to your circle.
Good friends = growing faith
Bad friends = compromised faith
1 Corinthians 15:33
Bad company corrupts good characters
Remember:
Guard your heart
Choose your circle wisely
Stay rooted in God
"Show me your friends and I'll show you your future in God"
