Spiritual Formation and Daily Walk with God
Have you every felt:
Spiritually dry
distant from God
like you're doing things for Him... but not really WITH Him.
Many believers know how to serve God... but very few know how to walk with God daily.
Many believers are busy for God... but disconnected from God.
You can serve... preach... share the Gospel... and still feel empty inside...
Because activity is not the same as intimacy.
The strength of your public life comes from your private connection.
By the end of this lesson:
You will understand what it means to abide in Christ
You will learn how to build a daily relationship with God
You will practice a real quiet time
You will begin developing consistent spiritual habits
Did you share the Gospel this week?
What happened when you stepped out?
Evangelism is powerful... but if your connection with God is weak - you will burn out.
You can't pour out what you don't receive daily.
Common struggles:
Inconsistency
Distraction
Busyness
Lack of Hunger
Burn Out
Some of you are tired... not because you're doing too much... but because you're doing it without connection.
You are serving without abiding
You are giving without receiving
You are working without resting in God
ILLUSTRATION:
Phone with No Charge
You may have potential... but without connection... you lose power.
The issue is not that God is distant - the issue is that we are disconnected
Disconnection leads to exhaustion.
“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.
5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.
JOHN 15:4-5
Jesus did not say:
Visit me occasionally
Think about me sometimes
He said: ABIDE in Me.
This is an invitation of Jesus. Abide in Me... and I in you.
Jesus did not say:
Work for Me
Perform for Me
He said: Stay with Me, Live in Me, Remain in Me.
ABIDE in Greek means meno. ABIDE means to remain, to stay connected, to dwell, to live in connection, to live in relationship, to not depart.
Jesus is not giving a suggestion - He is giving a command for continual relationship. This is present tense it means ongoing action.
Abiding is not an event - it's a lifestyle
Abiding is not an emotional experience or occasional prayer... it is constant union with Christ.
Christianity is not about visiting God... it's about living with God.
JOHN 15:5 says
I am the vine; you are the branches
VINE in Greek is ampelos
BRANCH in Greek is klema
ILLUSTRATION:
Branch and Vine
Branch disconnected = no fruit
Branch connected = life + fruit
A branch does not struggle to produce fruit
A branch does not strive
A branch does not force
It simply stay connected
The vine is the source of life, nutrients, sustenance
The branch is completely dependent on the vine
A branch has no independent life
You don't have life in yourself - your life flows from Him.
Christianity is not self-sustaining... It is Christ-sustained.
The branch does not produced fruit by effort... Fruit is produced by connection.
A disconnected branch doesn't struggle... it dies.
JOHN 15:5
...apart from Me you can do nothing
NOTHING in Greek is ouden, it means absolutely nothing, zero, not even one thing.
Jesus is not exaggerationg - He is stating an absolute spiritual truth.
You can preach, you can serve, you can lead, but spiritually, apart from Him... it produces NOTHING eternal.
Activity without abiding produces emptiness.
JOHN 15:2
He prunes every branch that bears fruit
PRUNE in Greek is Kathairo, it means to cleanse, to cut away, to remove what is unnecessary.
God removes distractions, sin, unhealthly patterns...
Not to harm you but to grow you.
Pruning is painful... but it is purposeful.
ILLUSTRATION:
A gardener cuts healthy branches to produce MORE fruit.
God will remove what is good... to make room for what is greater.
JOHN 15:8
...bear much fruit...
FRUIT in Greek is karpos, it means visible evidence of life, the result of inner condition
Fruit is not effort-based... It is connection-based.
You don't produce fruit by trying harder... You produce fruit by staying connected.
WHAT IS FRUIT?
Galation 5:22
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
Fruit is:
Character (Gal 5:22)
Obedience
Impact
Disciples
Fruit is the evidence that you are truly connected.
38 Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.”
41 And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. 42 But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
LUKE 10:38-42
Martha was busy... Mary was present...
You can be active... and still miss what matters.
Martha was doing FOR Jesus...
Mary was being WITH Jesus.
Jesus didn't correct her service...
He corrected her priority.
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.
JOHN 10:27
My sheep hear My voice...
Hear in Greek is akouo, it means to listen, to understand, to respond
Hearing God is not just sound or feeling... it includes response and obedience
God is not silent - we are just distracted.
God is always speaking... the question is... are we listening?
You haven't truly heard God until you obey what He said.
ILLUSTRATION:
Radio Frequency
God is speaking... but you must tune in.
Let's simplify this...
Daily walk = relationship
3 CORE SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES
WORD (HEARING GOD)
God speaks to you
PSALM 119:105
Your word is a lamp to my feet
And a light to my path.
You have to read daily... You have to understand... and you have to apply it to your life.
God speaks through His Word.
STUDYING GOD'S WORD
SOAP Method
SCRIPTURE - Read a passage
OBSERVATION - What stands out?
APPLICATION - What will I do?
PRAYER - Talk to God
PRAYER (TALKING TO GOD)
You speak to God
JEREMIAH 33:3
Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’
Praying is not a ritual... praying is not a performance... praying is a relationship.
Prayer is not a duty - it's a conversation.
WORSHIP (CONNECTING WITH GOD)
You connect with God
JOHN 4:24
God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
Worship is a lifestyle... Worship is a heart posture.
This is not a religion - This is relationship
You don't need a stage... a microphone... a title...
You just need time with God
I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
GALATIANS 5:16
There's two ways to live:
Flesh (self-led)
Spirit (God-led)
WALK in Greek is peripateo, it means to live daily, to conduct your life.
Walking in the Spirit is not occasional, not emotional... it is a daily lifestyle of dependence.
The Holy Spirit is not just power - He is your daily guide... He is not just your Sunday experience.
He leads, He guides, He convicts, He empowers.
You dont just experience the Spirit - you walk with Him every day.
You are not meant to live this life alone...
The Christian life is not hard - it is impossible without the Spirit.
ILLUSTRATION:
GPS Navigation
Follow your own way = lost
Follow guidance = direction
We didn't just talk about doing more for God
We talked about being with Him.
and if we're honest...
Some of us have been:
busy
distracted
tired
even while serving God
We've been doing things for Him...
but we've drifted from Him...
JOHN 15:4
The invitation of Jesus
Abide in Me... and I in you.
Jesus is not standing and saying
"Do more"
He's saying
"Come closer"
He is not asking for your performance...
He's inviting you into His presence.
When was the last time you were with God... not to ask something... not to perform... but just to be with Him?
Some of you love God... but you've been disconnected.
This is not about guilt... it's about returning.
Returning to the place where it started...
Returning to the presence of God...
Returning to intimacy.
I'm not asking you to do anything complicated...
I'm just asking you to come back.
If you know in your heart... you've been distant, dry, or disconnected...
PRAY to God to restore you...
Abide in Him.
Just be with Him.
Your hunger will return
Your desire for God will grow
Your time with Him will deepen
You will no longer live disconnected - You will live abiding
It's not about trying harder... It's about staying closer
You don't need more effort... You need more of His presence.
