Imagine a builder constructing a massive skyscraper without studying the blueprint carefully.
He guesses measurements, ignores structural principles, and trusts emotions instead of design specifications.
At first, the building may appear stable.
But eventually:
cracks begin to appear,
weaknesses develop,
and the entire structure becomes dangerous.
Why?
Because a wrong foundation always produces instability.
In the same way, many believers today try to build their spiritual lives without proper theology.
They rely on:
feelings,
opinions,
culture,
trends,
motivational messages,
instead of the truth of God’s Word.
As a result:
confusion increases,
deception spreads,
false doctrine grows,
and many believers become spiritually unstable.
Theology is not merely for pastors, scholars, or Bible teachers.
Every believer already has theology.
The question is not:
“Do you have theology?”
The question is:
“Is your theology biblical?”
Because what we believe about God affects:
how we worship,
how we live,
how we suffer,
how we pray,
how we love,
and how we follow Jesus.
Right theology leads to right living.
The word “theology” comes from two Greek words:
Theos = God
Logos = word, study, discourse
Therefore, theology means:
“the study of God.”
Proper theology is the careful study of God as He has revealed Himself through Scripture.
Theology is not merely collecting information about God.
It is learning to know God rightly so that our lives are transformed by truth.
The goal of theology is not prideful knowledge.
The goal of theology is worship, obedience, intimacy, and transformation.
Many believers seek emotional experiences without biblical foundation.
But Scripture teaches:
emotions without truth lead to deception,
while truth without relationship leads to cold religion.
God desires both:
truth in the mind,
and fire in the heart.
This teaching will focus on three major truths about proper theology:
The Foundation of Theology — Knowing God Through Revelation
The Nature of God — Understanding the Triune God
The Purpose of Theology — Transformation, Truth, and Spiritual Growth
Throughout biblical history, God progressively revealed Himself to humanity.
In the Old Testament:
God revealed His holiness,
covenant,
justice,
power,
and promises.
The Law, prophets, sacrifices, and covenants pointed toward Jesus Christ.
In the New Testament:
Jesus became the full revelation of God,
the apostles explained His work,
and the Church was established upon revealed truth.
False teaching has existed since the Garden of Eden.
Satan’s first attack was theological.
Genesis 3:1
“Has God indeed said…?”
The enemy attacked:
God’s Word,
God’s character,
and God’s truth.
Every false doctrine ultimately distorts:
who God is,
what God said,
or what God requires.
This is why theology matters deeply.
“Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” — 2 Peter 3:18
“Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” — John 17:17
“Always be prepared to give an answer…” — 1 Peter 3:15
“All Scripture is breathed out by God…” — 2 Timothy 3:16
“For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.” — Colossians 2:9
Theology begins with revelation.
Humanity cannot discover God merely through human intelligence.
God must reveal Himself.
GENERAL REVELATION
God reveals Himself through creation.
Psalm 19:1
“The heavens declare the glory of God…”
The universe testifies to:
design,
order,
intelligence,
and power.
GOD REVEALS HIMSELF THROUGH CREATION
Consider:
the precision of the sun,
the complexity of DNA,
the structure of the human body,
the laws governing the universe.
These things reveal divine wisdom.
The human body alone reflects astonishing design:
nervous system,
cardiovascular system,
respiratory system,
brain function.
Creation is not random chaos.
Creation reveals an intelligent Creator.
Romans 1:20
“His invisible attributes are clearly seen…”
General revelation reveals:
God’s existence,
power,
wisdom,
majesty.
But it cannot fully reveal salvation.
For salvation, humanity needs special revelation.
SPECIAL REVELATION
God specifically revealed Himself through:
Scripture,
prophets,
Jesus Christ,
and the Holy Spirit.
The Greek word for revelation is apokalupsis.
It means:
unveiling,
disclosure,
revealing what was hidden.
The Bible is God unveiling Himself to humanity.
THE STUDY OF THEOLOGY
Theology includes many important areas:
Bibliology - Study of Scripture
Christology - Study of Jesus Christ
Pneumatology - Study of the Holy Spirit
Paterology - Study of God the Father
Soteriology - Study of salvation
Hamartiology - Study of sin
Ecclesiology - Study of the Church
Eschatology - Study of the end times
Each area reveals part of God’s redemptive plan.
THE CENTRAL THEME OF THE BIBLE
The Bible has one unified message:
Jesus Christ.
The Old Testament prepares for His coming.
The New Testament reveals His coming and work.
John 5:39
“These are they which testify of Me.”
The Bible is not merely a collection of stories.
It is one unfolding revelation of redemption through Jesus Christ.
LIFE EXAMPLE
Imagine reading only one chapter of a novel and assuming you understand the entire story.
Many people build theology from isolated verses without understanding the full counsel of Scripture.
Proper theology studies:
context,
historical background,
literary meaning,
and the full biblical narrative.
Truth must be interpreted through Scripture, not emotions.
One of the greatest revelations of theology is the nature of God.
THE TRINITY
The Bible reveals one God existing eternally in three Persons:
Father,
Son,
Holy Spirit.
This is called the Trinity.
Deuteronomy 6:4
“The Lord our God, the Lord is one.”
Christianity is monotheistic:
there is only one God.
Yet within the unity of God exists three distinct Persons.
The Hebrew word for God in Genesis 1 is Elohim.
This word is plural in form.
Genesis 1:26
“Let Us make man in Our image…”
Plural language points toward the triune nature of God.
THE FATHER
The Father:
planned redemption,
sent the Son,
adopts believers into His family.
John 3:16
“For God so loved the world…”
The Father initiated salvation through love.
THE SON
Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man.
Colossians 2:9
“In Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.”
Jesus is:
Creator,
Savior,
Redeemer,
King.
He is distinct from the Father yet equal in deity.
THE HOLY SPIRIT
The Holy Spirit:
regenerates,
sanctifies,
empowers,
convicts,
teaches believers.
John 15:26
“The Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father…”
The Holy Spirit is not merely a force.
He is fully divine.
THE TRIUNE GOD IN ACTION
At Jesus’ baptism:
Matthew 3:16-17
The Son is baptized,
The Spirit descends,
The Father speaks from heaven.
Three Persons. One God.
THE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD
God’s attributes reveal His perfect nature.
GOD IS ETERNAL
Psalm 90:2
“From everlasting to everlasting, You are God.”
God has no beginning or ending.
GOD IS OMNIPRESENT
Psalm 139:7
“Where shall I flee from Your presence?”
God is present everywhere.
GOD IS OMNISCIENT
He knows:
every thought,
every motive,
every hidden thing.
Psalm 139:1-6
“You have searched me and known me…”
GOD IS HOLY
The Hebrew word qadosh means:
set apart,
pure,
morally perfect.
Isaiah 6:3
“Holy, holy, holy…”
God is completely separated from evil.
GOD IS LOVE
1 John 4:8
“God is love.”
God’s love is holy, sacrificial, and redemptive.
GOD IS SOVEREIGN
God rules over all creation.
Nothing exists outside His authority.
Daniel 4:35
“None can stay His hand…”
LIFE EXAMPLE
Imagine trying to navigate an ocean without understanding the power of the sea.
Many believers live casually because they have minimized God.
Proper theology restores awe.
When believers truly understand:
God’s holiness,
majesty,
power,
sovereignty,
they begin to worship differently.
A small view of God produces shallow Christianity.
Theology is not meant merely to fill the mind.
It is meant to transform the life.
TO GROW SPIRITUALLY
2 Peter 3:18
“Grow in grace and knowledge…”
Spiritual growth requires:
time,
study,
obedience,
maturity.
Deep truth develops deep believers.
TO AVOID DECEPTION
False doctrine destroys lives.
Satan still asks:
“Has God said?”
Without sound theology:
people become spiritually unstable,
culture replaces Scripture,
feelings replace truth.
Ephesians 4:14
“Tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine…”
Truth stabilizes believers.
TO DEFEND THE FAITH
1 Peter 3:15
“Always be ready to give a defense…”
Believers must understand Scripture well enough to:
explain truth,
answer questions,
proclaim the Gospel.
HEAD KNOWLEDGE VS HEART KNOWLEDGE
Theology must move from:
information,
to:
transformation.
Knowledge without obedience produces pride.
James 1:22
“Be doers of the word…”
Theology must affect:
speech,
attitudes,
relationships,
purity,
worship,
ministry.
GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY
God’s sovereign purposes will be fulfilled.
Ephesians 1:9-10
“According to His good pleasure…”
God governs history according to His eternal purpose.
The Greek word thelema refers to God’s will or desire.
God actively works through history to accomplish redemption.
Yet humanity remains morally responsible for choices.
God is sovereign without being the author of sin.
LIFE EXAMPLE
A skilled orchestra conductor directs every instrument toward one final masterpiece.
Likewise, God sovereignly works through history toward His ultimate purpose:
the glory of Jesus Christ.
Even painful seasons are not outside God’s control.
THE PURPOSE OF GOD
God desires:
redemption,
reconciliation,
restoration.
2 Peter 3:9
“Not wishing that any should perish…”
God’s ultimate purpose centers on Jesus Christ.
Everything in theology ultimately points to Jesus.
He perfectly reveals the Father.
The Bible points to Him from Genesis to Revelation.
True theology leads to deeper understanding of Christ.
All doctrine must align with Him.
History itself moves toward Christ’s Kingdom.
A shallow understanding of Scripture produces weak spiritual foundations.
Develop consistent Bible study habits.
Study context, themes, and doctrine carefully.
Learn foundational theology systematically.
Ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom and understanding.
Deep truth produces deep maturity.
APPLICATION 2 — LET THEOLOGY TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE
Truth is not merely for information.
Truth must produce transformation.
Apply biblical truth to daily decisions.
Repent where Scripture confronts sin.
Worship God according to truth, not emotion alone.
Allow doctrine to shape your character.
Right theology should lead to holy living.
APPLICATION 3 — DEFEND AND PROCLAIM THE TRUTH BOLDLY
This generation desperately needs biblical truth.
Share biblical truth lovingly but confidently.
Correct false doctrine with humility.
Teach others sound doctrine.
Stand firm even when culture opposes Scripture.
Truth is not popular because it changes lives.
Theology is not dry religion.
Theology is learning to know the living God.
When Isaiah saw God’s holiness, he was transformed.
When Moses encountered God’s glory, he was changed.
When Paul encountered Jesus, his entire life was redirected.
A true revelation of God changes everything.
The Church does not need less truth.
The Church needs deeper truth filled with the fire of the Holy Spirit.
God is:
holy,
eternal,
sovereign,
faithful,
merciful,
loving,
just,
and glorious beyond imagination.
He is not created by human opinion.
He is the eternal King of Heaven.
And this God has revealed Himself through Jesus Christ.
Jesus is:
the center of Scripture,
the fullness of God,
the Savior of humanity,
the coming King.
Declare today:
“I will know God through His Word.
I will stand upon biblical truth.
I will reject deception.
I will grow in wisdom and revelation.
I will worship God in spirit and truth.
I will live for the glory of Jesus Christ.”
May your theology produce:
deeper worship,
deeper holiness,
deeper love,
deeper faith,
deeper surrender,
and deeper intimacy with God.
And may the Lord raise up believers who not only know about God—but truly know Him, walk with Him, proclaim Him, and glorify Him until Jesus Christ returns in power and glory.
Amen.
