Welcome to Haldimand Museums’ virtual Words of the War-Sydney Hewitt’s Letters Home exhibit!

In 1914, at the age of 21, Sydney Hewitt left his family and home in Haldimand County, to volunteer as a member of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. While serving Canada, Sydney sent home regular letters to his friends and families detailing his life, as well as his thoughts and feelings throughout the war. In exploring Sydney’s story through these letters, you will also learn about the experiences and contributions of other Haldimand County residents and Canadians, both at home and abroad, during the First World War.
