The shipping industry as it is today has a significant impact on the environment. It produces approximately 3% of the world’s CO2 emissions and, if left unchecked, it could reach 10% by 2050.
In July 2023, delegates from around the world agreed to reduce the CO2 output.
Approximately 80% of all goods are shipped by sea and to reach this goal there needs to be meaningful change - not only for air quality but for sea life as well. This is where sail cargo and sustainable shipping that uses the limitless power of the wind come to the fore.
For centuries trade was done using wind power. It was well understood, with the pinnacle coming in the late nineteenth century. Clipper ships such as Cutty Sark, Ariel and Fiery Cross were the culmination of thousands of years of learning, testing and trials on the sea and these ships were able to sail from East Asia to Europe in less than 100 days.
With environmental awareness rising worldwide, and sustainability now an established watchword for both individuals and businesses, companies of sailors are re-envisioning the days of sail for a sustainable future on the waves.
