Banned Books Week is an annual awareness campaign promoted by the American Library Association (ALA) that celebrates the freedom to read. Banned Books Week draws attention to the harms of censorship and teaches the importance of our First Amendment rights. The event typically runs during the last week of September. However, the importance of an individual's freedom to access books and materials of his or her choice is recognized year round.
