Creating A Downloadable Digital Product In WooCommerce

In this tutorial we look at creating downloadable digital products in WooCommerce.

Downloadable digital products do not require any shipping.

When customers purchase downloadable digital files, those orders are completed immediately. This means customers can access their files straight away from their account and from a link they receive in their order email.

Step 1

1. Login into your website.
2. In the left hand column click Products. You will then see a list of products (if you have already created any).
3. To edit an existing product hover over the name and click Edit.
4. To create a new product click Add New.

LEFT COLUMN

Product Name

Enter the Product Name & click Publish to save.

Doing this will generate the URL for this product. The URL is the address people use to locate this product page in a web browser.

Example: https://www.mywebsite.com.au/product/productname

Note: Every page on your website requires a unique URL to avoid page display issues.

If need be, you can edit the URL by clicking Edit.

Product Description

Add your long product description in the first window.

Product Description

Add your long product description in the first window. The long product description needs the following.

• 150 words.
• Should include the keyword phrase in the first sentence and one instance of the keyword phrase needs to be made bold.
• Write well written descriptive copy and include variations on the keyword phrase that people might use to search for your product.

Scroll down to the Product Data section.

Set the Product data to be: Simple Product.

Check both boxes for Virtual and Downloadable.

General Tab

Regular Price: Enter the price excluding GST.

Sale Price: Enter the sale price excluding GST.

Downloadable Files

1. Enter the name of the file.
2. Enter the file URL by clicking Choose File. (The URL is the 'path' to the file saved on your server).
3. To add more than one file click Add File.
4. Download Limit: Set how many times the file can be downloaded. Leave blank for unlimited re-downloads.
5. Download Expiry: Enter the number of days before a download link expires, or leave blank for never expires.
6. Tax Status: Taxable or None as required.
7. Tax class: Standard or Zero Rate as required.

Inventory Tab

1. SKU: Assign a SKU code for the product.
2. Stock Status: Enter the stock status to In Stock.
3. Sold Individually: Enable this to only allow one of this item to be bought in a single order.

Linked Products

Link any other relevant products that you think the customer would be interested in when buying this product.

Up-sells: Recommend a better more expensive product.

Cross-sells: Recommend other products they would be interested in.

To add an Up-Sell or Cross-Sell product simply start typing it's name and you will see a list of matching products.

Attributes Tab

Here you can add attributes to provide additional, descriptive information for the digital product if required.

Advanced Tab

Purchase note: Enter an optional note to send to customer after purchase.

Menu order: Order the position of the product within the category it is saved to.

Enable product reviews: Yes/No.

Product Short Description

A products short description is placed near the price.

If you choose to write a short description keep it to around 40 words max.

Yoast SEO

Yoast SEO controls the product page SEO settings.

Click Edit Snippet.

SEO Title: Enter a browser page title no longer than 70 characters. Make sure to include the keyword phrase people would use to find this product.

Slug: Update the slug (URL) if you want to - in most cases you don’t need to touch this. Note: Each page must have its own unique URL or it will cause conflicts.

Meta Description: Add a short description no longer than 165 characters. Ensure the description includes the keyword phrase. This description will be used by Google when displaying information about this page in a search result.

Focus Keyword: Add the focus keyword for this product.

RIGHT COLUMN
