Our curriculums may not include as much morphology as we'd like. This document provides sequence suggestions to guide you. Word study is most effective when connected to the student's reading, writing, spelling, and vocabulary. Analyze your ELA core curriculum and explore your science and history materials.

How to Use These Lists: Make sure you're familiar with what your curriculum covers, the morphology standards, and best practices for designing a scope and sequence. If you notice gaps between your core materials and effective morphology instruction, identify the morphemes you need to incorporate into your grade-level lessons. Remember, don’t just go through a list of morphemes—embed them into daily conversations and knowledge-building activities. Pay attention to the words used throughout your academic day and weave in morphology lessons where they naturally fit!

Directions: This journal contains 10 recording pages and provides space for students to collect and review 20 morphemes. Each recording page includes space for two morphemes. Students write the morpheme in the center, record its meaning, use example word(s) in a sentence, list example words containing the morpheme, and draw a picture to help remember its meaning. The journal can be used independently or alongside the accompanying morphology slide deck.
