3/27 Haikus

Haiku is a form of poetry from the 1600s, in the Edo period of Japan's history. the most famous poet of that time was Matsuo Basho, and he perfected the form in the course of his lifetime.

Most of us are familiar with the 5/7/5 rhyme pattern of a Haiku, but in the more formal tradition there was usually a Kigo, or mention of the season, and a Kiregi, or 'cutting' word or dash, to give a twist to the poem. it's easy to get caught up in the form over the content, but poetry is elastic and accommodating, so we encourage writers to play with their concept and vocabulary in creating Haikus.
