The Unpacking Challenge: Innovative Tools
for Teaching Math Word Problems
The Problem Attribute Tool enables teachers to explain. a word problem without solving it for students. This tool helps teachers understand where the student is struggling so that they can identify questions to assist the student in making progress towards a correct solution.
The KEY is a routine to empower students to begin the unpacking process and then persevere in solving word problems. The KEY implements the Four-Step Method of problem solving: understand the problem, find a strategy, execute the strategy and look back at your work. The KEY makes the Four-Step Method more accessible to students.
The KEY Training Worksheet teaches students the vocabulary to identify and communicate where specifically they need assistance. Rather than “I’m stuck,” a student can say “I need help with the problem wording,” or “I don’t know which strategy to use.”
The Math Detective Worksheet teaches students how to look back and check their work by analyzing and discussing the correct and incorrect work of others and then directing them to look back at their own work to apply what they just learned.
These are 22 problems organized in order of increasing difficulty. Answers to all question on the worksheets are also included. For each problem there is a KEY Training Worksheet and Math Detective Worksheet. Recommendation: Print worksheets back-to-back.
