A pursuit of Danish Design
In this project, we present a loving and detailed replica of the iconic "Bar Cube" by Hans J. Wegner – a masterpiece of Danish furniture art that combines timeless design with practical functionality. Our goal was to capture the elegance and craftsmanship of the original while applying traditional woodworking techniques with the utmost care.
The Original by Hans Wegner:
Hans J. Wegner, known for his inimitable ability to create furniture pieces that are both beautiful and functional, designed the Bar Cube as a compact and well-thought-out piece for private enjoyment. Its design is characterized by clean lines, high-quality materials, and a refined mechanism that elegantly reveals the interior when needed. It is a prime example of Scandinavian modernism, which emphasizes the appreciation for wood and fine details.
Our Replica – A Manual Reinterpretation and Traditional Execution:
In creating this replica, we delved deeply into Wegner's philosophy and the constructive details of the original, placing great emphasis on traditional craftsmanship techniques:
Material Selection & Woodworking: The replica was crafted from carefully selected ash wood, whose light grain and robustness perfectly match the clear design language. The plywood for the lid was also custom-made in-house to ensure the exact look and quality of the original and achieve perfect material harmony.
Precise Wood Joints: A central element of the craftsmanship is the joinery. All dovetails were hand-sawn and mortised with a chisel, which not only guarantees the highest precision but also underscores the value and durability of the furniture piece. Traditional hide glue was used as an adhesive, valued for its reversible properties and historical authenticity.
Surface Treatment – Protection and Aesthetics: The surface of the ash wood was treated in several steps to highlight its natural beauty and protect it at the same time:
First, the wood was coated with a varnish to create an initial surface hardening and protective layer.
Subsequently, the wood was treated multiple times with native linseed oil, enriched with 3% orange oil. This traditional oil treatment protects the wood from the inside out, emphasizes the grain, and gives the surface a soft, natural shine and a pleasant feel. The orange oil also provides a fresh scent and improves the curing of the linseed oil.
Fittings & Details: The fine brass feet were highly polished to create an elegant contrast to the light wood and give the cube a light, floating appearance. The brass fittings for the drawer slides were not only fabricated but also precisely inlaid into the wood, ensuring perfect function and a flawless look.
Functional Design:
The refined pull-out mechanism, which makes the Bar Cube a flexible serving companion, was replicated in detail. The storage areas for bottles, glasses, and bar utensils are optimally sized and easily accessible, fully reflecting the functionality of the original.
Conclusion:
The "Bar Cube" is more than just a piece of furniture; it is a tribute to the craftsmanship and timeless design of Hans J. Wegner. This replica is a profound testament to the fact that good design can be not only preserved but also newly experienced through precise and traditional craftsmanship. It invites you to enjoy special moments in style and to experience the joy of fine design and excellent craftsmanship.
