Presented by Schooner or Later, Official Provisioner of the WAC. When the wind chill hits double digits below zero, the Club declares it summer. Grass skirts optional, enthusiasm mandatory.
The Club's most solemn occasion, in that it has a podium. The Commodore delivers the State of the Club, champions are entered into the Honor Roll, and last year's photograph takes its place on the wall.
A charity tournament on the pond, held when the ice and the Head of Grounds agree.
Snow athletics of questionable regulation, for members of every age.
The big game on the Club's 300-inch screen, with a halftime free-throw contest for members of all ages. Snacks provisioned by Schooner or Later.
The Bracket Committee convenes for March Madness. Brackets are due before tip-off; the winner's name goes on the Honor Roll and the loser's goes in the minutes.
The annual charity racket games tournament, sponsored by Mainsail Renewables. Sportsmanship expected; trash talk regulated.
The Club's chip-and-putt championship. Nine-iron, wedge and putter only. The champion receives the Green Jacket, sourced at considerable expense from a thrift store.
Junior members search the walnut grove for eggs. Walnuts do not count, no matter how hard you argue.
Hats encouraged, seersucker respected. Mint juleps for the grown-ups, lemonade for everyone, and the Junior Stick-Horse Derby on the front lawn.
The Commodore rings the bell, the dock is christened, and the pond is declared open. The first swim is optional for adults and inevitable for children.
Sack races, tug-of-war and water balloons, followed by s'mores at the fire pit. Ribbons for every competitor; glory for a few.
Paddling and cocktails on the pond. Any vessel that floats may enter; sinking is a forfeit. The club kayak remains undefeated.
Feature presentations on the Club's 300-inch screen. Popcorn provided; talking during the film is tolerated only from members under ten.
The fall rematch on the chip-and-putt course. Falling walnuts are considered natural hazards and are played as they lie.
Costumes required, courage optional. A haunted walk through the fieldhouse for junior members, and trunk-or-treat in the lot.
Flag football on the lawn, finished in time for everyone to get home to their own turkey.
The Club tree is lit atop the locker room. Cocoa, carols, and the annual debate over whether it's crooked.
Each season Schooner or Later debuts a new menu, and Club members get the first seating. Reservations strongly encouraged, entirely optional.
“A basement with purpose.”
