Next steps to improve this project:
Design and fabricate a tool rest for the track
Create a more convenient track-locking mechanism for the tailstock so people don't have to loosen 4 bolts every time they want to move it
Make a more complex head and tail stock to grab onto the stock on both ends, rather than just a sharpened point
The entire team learned from this project to varying degrees.
Major takeaways include: familiarity with Onshape and all of its features, communicating and coordinating busy out-of-class schedules, electrical modeling and wiring, calculating motor torque and other relevant features of the forces in play, and calculating the life of different components of the system.
Dozens of tools were used to complete this project, including:
Mill
Lathe
Plasma cutter
Waterjet
TIG and MIG welder
Double-angle cuts on the horizontal band saw
And more
Overall, this project was incredibly successful at its overall goal of teaching everyone new skills and creating a physical product that we are proud of.
