My teaching philosophy is centered on helping learners move from understanding concepts toward applying knowledge confidently, critically, and responsibly.
I believe that meaningful learning requires more than the memorization of information. Students should develop the ability to question assumptions, evaluate evidence, solve problems, communicate effectively, and reflect on their own progress.
In scientific education, this means supporting students in understanding experimental design, methodological controls, data interpretation, research integrity, uncertainty, and laboratory safety.
In language education, it means building confidence through structured communication, regular practice, differentiated guidance, and constructive feedback.
I value inclusive learning environments where students from different cultural, linguistic, and educational backgrounds feel respected and encouraged to participate.

Earlier teaching-evaluation summaries covering the 2023â2026 period identified themes such as clear explanations, supportive guidance, integration of theory and practice, and international perspectives.
However, the available summaries do not currently include complete authenticated survey instruments, attributable course-level response counts, official numerical ratings, or independently verified student comments.
Accordingly, these observations are treated as reflective teaching summaries rather than verified institutional student-evaluation findings.
Formal teaching evaluations, peer-observation records, documented student feedback, or authenticated assessment reports may be incorporated when available and appropriate for publication.
This distinction supports transparency and responsible representation of my teaching record.
My goal is to help students develop understanding, confidence, analytical reasoning, and the ability to apply knowledge responsibly.

đ Location: Environmental Microbiology & Biotechnology Laboratory, National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan (24.1130° N, 120.6745° E)
From 2019 to 2021, I embarked on a transformative scientific journeyâisolating endophytic bacteria from rice plants to strengthen their resistance to heat stress, one of the most pressing threats brought on by climate change.
This project, conducted at the Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology Laboratory at National Chung Hsing University, aimed to solve a simple yet critical question: Can we help rice survive and thrive under extreme heat, using natureâs own microbial allies?
I isolated and studied five powerful bacterial strains from Oryza sativaâ
đŹ Bacillus tequilensis LB3
đŹ Bacillus coagulans LB6
đŹ Bacillus paralicheniformis AS9 (later renamed Strain W)
đŹ Bacillus pumilus LB16 (Strain N)
đŹ Bacillus paranthracis i40C (Strain D)
These endophytes were carefully screened for their plant growth-promoting (PGP) traits including:
Production of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), a vital plant hormone
Nitrogen fixation
Phosphate and potassium solubilization
Siderophore production to enhance iron uptake
đĄď¸ But the real challenge began when we subjected these rice plants to heat stress conditions of 40â45°C. The results were extraordinary.
By inoculating rice plants with these strains and supplementing them with just half the usual dose of fertilizer (NPK50), the plants not only survived the intense heat but thrived:
â
Up to 78% increase in plant height at 40°C
â
195% biomass boost from strain LB6
â
113% rise in dry grain weight per panicle with strain W
â
50% more fresh grain weight with inoculated plants
â
68% reduction in MDA levels, meaning far less oxidative damage
â
Enhanced accumulation of proline, salicylic acid, and abscisic acid (ABA)âall key stress-response indicators
What this meant was more robust panicles, greener leaves (higher SPAD values), and healthier grain under extreme conditionsâan absolute game-changer for future farming in heat-vulnerable regions.
These bacteria didnât just support the plantâthey triggered biological defense systems. They rewired the rice plantsâ inner chemistry to adapt and resist heat more effectively than uninoculated plants ever could.
đĄ This project didnât end with lab success. It provided a blueprint for future sustainable agriculture. Weâre now closer to integrating these biofertilizers into real-world rice farming systemsâreducing reliance on chemical inputs and enhancing crop yield, even as the planet warms.
This initiative represents more than scientific achievementâit reflects the resilience of life, the power of collaboration between microbes and plants, and our responsibility to protect food security through eco-conscious innovation.
đŹđ¨đ˝âđŹ I am proud to have led this work alongside talented researchers, and I remain committed to pushing the boundaries of climate-smart agriculture for a better tomorrow.
Project Title: Advanced Cu/Ag/TiOâ Nanomaterials for Viral and Bacterial Inactivation Across Air, Water, and Surfaces: Toward Sustainable Disinfection and Public Health Protection
From 2021 to 2025, I conducted a multidisciplinary research project at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), under the School of Medicine and the Institute of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (IEOHS), in collaboration with KPYâs Lab. This work focused on developing next-generation nanotechnology-based disinfection systems to address the growing public health risks associated with viral and bacterial contamination in indoor air, water systems, and high-touch surfaces.
At the core of this initiative was the design, fabrication, and optimization of Cu/Ag/TiOâ nanocomposites, tailored for enhanced antiviral and antibacterial performance. These novel materials were extensively characterized using high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HR-XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), providing critical insights into their structural and functional properties.
In water disinfection studies, the nanocomposite containing 3.12 wt% Ag and 1.94 wt% Cu on TiOâ proved exceptionally effective, achieving complete inactivation of MS2 bacteriophages within one hourâa performance superior to that of individual Ag/TiOâ and Cu/TiOâ systems. The enhanced efficacy was attributed to a synergistic interaction of Agâş and Cu²⺠ions and photocatalytic generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to rapid degradation of viral capsids and nucleic acids.
In the realm of airborne viral aerosol removal, I developed and tested Ag/Cu-TiOâ-coated chitosan (CS) filters synthesized via thermal and chemical reduction routes. Integrated with a negative air ionizer (NAI), these filters achieved up to 99.90% removal efficiency within 10 minutes, with inactivation rate constants ranging from 0.692 to 0.757 minâťÂš. The filtration mechanism involved physical entrapment, enhanced surface interaction through chitosan scaffolding, ROS-mediated oxidative stress, and direct ion-virus interaction. These results demonstrated the nanomaterials' effectiveness in high-efficiency air purification systems, particularly for high-risk indoor environments.
Complementing these technologies, I also engineered water collection and aseptic water systems for sustainable deployment, targeting low-resource environments, disaster relief scenarios, and pandemic preparedness. These prototype systems incorporated the developed nanomaterials into modular designs, highlighting their potential for integration into public and commercial water treatment units.
This project, conducted at NYCUâs School of Medicine and IEOHS within KPYâs Lab, not only advanced scientific understanding of nanomaterial-virus interactions but also laid the groundwork for practical, scalable solutions to mitigate airborne and waterborne viral transmission. It contributes to a growing body of work aimed at sustainable, high-efficacy disinfection technologies, aligning with broader global health, climate adaptation, and One Health initiatives.
As the research moves forward, focus will shift to enhancing long-term nanomaterial stability, recyclability, and environmental safety, while working toward real-world integration in air and water purification systems. Ultimately, this work envisions a future where advanced nanomaterials serve as a frontline defense against viral outbreaks, improving public health resilience and safeguarding global communities.
