Women Techmakers is a Google owned-brand and global program for women in technology. Women Techmakers provides visibility, community, and resources for women in technology globally across all career levels to support them in joining, thriving, and leading the industry. We encourage all women contributing to the industry to participate in Women Techmakers programs and events including developers, designers, entrepreneurs, product managers, data scientists, and more. We also support all genders to participate and volunteer for our women’s-focused events and initiatives. Women Techmakers (WTM) was founded by Googlers in 2012, including Megan Smith, former VP at Google[x] and current CEO and Founder of shift7. The program started as a once-a-year event for women in technology to connect and inspire one another at Google I/O. In 2013 Women Techmakers became a global brand and program led by Natalie Villalobos who has led its expansion into scholarships, a membership program, and with presence at Google and industry-wide events, which now reach over 100k women in 190 countries annually.
In 2014 we transitioned “Google Developer Groups Women” initiative into Women Techmakers Ambassadors to simplify the messaging of supporting women in Google Developer Groups communities. Since then, over 400 Google Developer Groups organizers have signed up to be a Women Techmakers Lead to advocate for diversity and inclusion in their local community. As a centrally owned and managed Google program, Women Techmakers allows the Google Developer Groups program to borrow the logo, messaging, and intention of the program and empowers Women Techmakers Ambassadors to be advocates for making a positive shift towards gender equality in tech. As we expand, we will offer the same to leaders in other technical communities.
You are each an independent representative of the Women Techmakers program and our shared mission to create visibility, community, and resources for women in tech. You are Ambassadors of Google technology, for diversity and inclusion, and a collective working towards an inclusive industry.
Every local community is different, so we aim to be inclusive in our definitions of success for Women Techmaker Ambassadors. Women Techmakers Ambassadors focus on organizing Women Techmakers events and encouraging participation of women (and other underrepresented minorities) in their community, in collaboration with their fellow organizers.
We suggest that you create annual inclusion and representation goals locally for your chapter, with your fellow organizers. For example, you may want to aim for two women-focused events per quarter, or improve speaker or membership diversity by a certain percentage. It is up to you to decide what the specific metrics should be. We also encourage Ambassadors to participate in International Women’s Day, by hosting an event celebrating and featuring women in your community. Women Techmakers offers a variety of support and content to help you achieve this.
