Intimate Partner Violence  (IPV)
Drivers and Policies

 DOI  10.3030/101096525

In today's Europe, a staggering statistic demands attention: one in three women in the EU has experienced physical and/or sexual violence since age 15, often at the hands of their (ex-)partners. Ending gender-based and domestic violence is a top priority for the European Commission. In this context, the ERC-funded WomEmpower project aims to shed light on the root causes and underlying mechanisms of this alarming phenomenon. Adopting a comprehensive ecological framework, WomEmpower will produce evidence-based research on the impact of household, community, and structural factors on intimate partner violence (IPV) in Europe and high-income countries.

Is having children a protective or risk factor for the incidence and severity of domestic violence?

Do gender norms impact  women’s risk of accepting or rationalizing IPV as well as their risk of IPV?

Which policies increase or decrease the risk of victimization and perpetration of domestic violence?

Do different data sources get the same answers? If not, where do we learn the most and why?
