"Motherhood and Domestic Violence: A Longitudinal Study Using Population-Wide Administrative Data" (IZA working paper No. 17129)
Sanna Bergvall and Nuria Rodríguez-Planas
Using Swedish longitudinal population-wide hospital records data from 2001 to 2026, stacked Difference in Differences, and a broader measure of domestic violence than with crime data, we show that violence decreases with pregnancy. We reconcile this singular outcome with the "increase in IPV" found by previous authors, and identify the mechanisms driving this drop in violence.
