We're Working to Celebrate & Preserve Our Rich History of Wolcott, VT WOLCOTT HISTORICAL SOCIETY - LAMOILLE COUNTY, VERMONT
What is history, anyway? Is it something long ago and far away that doesn’t matter? Or is it every experience in our culture that makes us who we are today? If we better understand the past, can we better understand who we are today? Do you The State of Vermont has two distinct Historic Districts as well as a number of other structures which are registered in VT’s Division for Historic Structures? Do you know that the Wolcott United Methodist Church, the old Schoolhouse on School Street, and Craftsbury’s “Little School” are all fine examples of mid-19th century architecture and elegance that have been deemed worthy of historic preservation?

From the early diary of Seth Hubbell, to present day residents, the history of Wolcott has been unfolding, one day at a time. Past and present are woven together as though with invisible threads.

We at the Wolcott Historical Society are here make Wolcott’s history accessible to everyone as we work together to bring in a stronger sense of community for present-day and future residents. We would love for you to join and support us in whatever way you can. Right now, we are joining the Old Schoolhouse Restoration Committee to raise funds to preserve the Old Standard School (do you know when it was given that name?). This outstanding example of mid-19th century architecture has been sitting idle for years now. The schoolhouse roof is long overdue for replacement, and it is critical that this be done soon to protect this asset that has so much history within its walls. While structurally sound, the outside of the building needs better drainage, and the floors will need to be redone due to moisture problems from years of neglect. When the repairs have been completed, Wolcott will get back dollar-for-dollar what it has spent in the value of the building.

The Wolcott Historical Society also needs a home that can begin to share our town’s wonderful artifacts with the community. The rail trail will also be coming through town, and a gazebo has already been built to create a stopping place. Restored, the old schoolhouse can also provide space for local artists to display their works, workshops and wellness classes to be held, and small gatherings to take place. Outdoors, a community garden can be constructed, and this will become a focus-point of our community once again.
