Getting Started

We’re excited that you’re interested in officiating volleyball in West Michigan. You’ll be joining a dedicated group of officials committed to supporting high school athletics and fostering a positive experience for athletes, coaches, and fellow officials.

1. Register with MHSAA

   • Register here for volleyball

   • Follow the link then click the box that says "Register Now" under "New Official Registration"

2. Complete OK Conference Registration (Required)

• Use this link to fill out the form

3. Join an Association

• If you are in West Michigan, join us, the West Michigan Volleyball Officials Association (WMVOA) for training and support

• If you live outside of West Michigan, here are other options:

  • Grand Haven and North - USAOA or MMOA (or both)

• Note: You only need to join one association*

4. Set Up ArbiterSports

• ArbiterSports is the scheduling platform used by assignors

• Once you register with MHSAA, join an association, and your approval is confirmed, you'll be added to Arbiter

• You'll then receive a welcome email with instructions to set up your account

• Use Arbiter to block dates you're unavailable--it's highly customizable

5. Participate in Training

• WMVOA Annual Clinics: Summer Slam (2nd Friday in July) and Summer Showcase (3rd Friday in July) at Aquinas College. Focuses on NFHS mechanics, classroom instruction, and one-on-one on-court training. Nominal fee applies.

• Additional opportunities include August post-meeting sessions, RefReps online courses, and NFHS/MHSAA online materials

• Weekly rules questions will be disseminated throughout the season to encourage study and advance knowledge of the rules

OK Conference Play Dates

• High School: Tues/Thurs, 5:00 PM start

• Middle School: Mon/Wed, 4:00 PM start

• Saturday Tournaments: 8:00-8:30 start, end ~3:30-4:30

Uniform Requirements

• Shirts: white or cyan blue MHSAA shirt (short or long sleeve, always match your partner)

• Pants: black slacks

• Accessories: all-black shoes, socks, and belt; wristwatch with second hand; black lanyard; Fox40 black whistle; red/yellow cards; pressure gauge & pump; net chain; half-dollar coin; 3x5 note cards; two-colored pen; optional line judge flags

• Middle School: $43/game

• Sub Varsity (best 2/3): $63

• Sub Varsity + Varsity Lines: $111

• Varsity Lines: $48

• Sub Varsity Quad/Tri: $139.50

• Varsity (best 3/5): $78
