Beginning in January CAB (Child and Adolesent Behavioral Supports) will be offering group therapy for 9 week blocks for 9 to 11 year olds in one group and for 12 to 14 year olds in another group. Three sessions will be for parents to share concerns and learn how to support the skills their child/adolescent is learning. A winter and spring session will be available for both age groups.
The model that is being utilized for the groups addresses the core set of lagging skills common to most mental health difficulties. The group therapy format offers numerous benefits. Interacting with peers of similar age affords in-session practice with social interactions, giving and receiving feedback, an opportunity to share things that work for an individual facing similar challenges and a reassurance that a person is not alone in their struggles. In addition, group therapy expands available services to more individuals, which is needed at this time.
