The school administration in each school assists with the selection process. Children aged 5 years old - 12 years old are selected based on need. Applications are provided to the schools who work with the parents or guardians to complete the information. The information collected includes age, clothing/shoe size, grade level, contact information, and signature of a parent or guardian. The applications are then collected by the schools and given to a representative of White Mountain Clothe-A-Child prior to the December date for the shopping event.
Any public school district located in Navajo or Apache Counties are eligible to participate. This includes the cities/towns of Alpine, Concho, Eagar, Linden, McNary, Pinetop-Lakeside, Show Low, Snowflake-Taylor, Springerville, St. Johns, Vernon. Children from the Red Hawk Ranch group home in Lakeside, Arizona are also eligible.
WMCAC has an established partnership with the J.C. Penney store located in Show Low, Arizona.
The parent/guardian takes the child to the store, and a volunteer is assigned to each child to escort them through the store for their shopping trip.
WMCAC allots $125 per child -- this amount may change each year based upon the total donation funds received. With the help of the local J.C. Penney store, our money goes a long way toward purchasing coats, shoes, pj's, underwear, shirts, jeans, and other warm clothes for each child.
WMCAC hosts up to two (2) events each year based on funding. We aim to host a Back to School program every August, and a Christmas program every December. If there are only enough funds for one event -- we will just hold the program in December. We recently started providing supplies for the emergency pantries at schools, which include new socks, underwear, and leggings.
No, there are no administration or overhead costs. WMCAC is blessed to have all fundraising and assistance in the shopping completely done by volunteers.
