Pi-Quest: Discovering Pi

This activity ranges from 90-120 minutes long.

Students will engage in a sequence of activities in a virtual learning environment that focuses on circles and pi.

Quick Vocab Checklist:

Arc - A part of the circumference of a circle

Arc Length - the distance between two points on a curve

Circle - all of the points that are equidistant from a center point

Circumference - the distance around the circle

Diameter - the distance across a circle that goes through its center point

Irrational Number - a quantity that cannot be expressed as a ratio of two integers. When expressed as a decimal, an irrational number has an infinite and non-recurring expansion.

Pi - A constant number that is the ratio of any circle's circumference to its diameter

Radius - the distance from the center point of a circle to its edge

Ratio - a relationship between two amounts, typically expressed as a quotient

Rational Number - a quantity that can be expressed as a ratio of whole numbers. When expressed as a decimal, a rational number has a finite or recurring expansion.

Sector - a portion of a circle enclosed by two radii and an arc

Let's create a fun infographic about Pi using Canva.com!

A few fun facts
One way Pi is used in everyday life and/or in a STEM field job

Activity: Crime Scene Investigation

Instructions for Crime Scene Investigation

First, read through the FBI case briefing letter to understand the crime and find the first clue. From the FBI case brief, you will determine which building map you will need to use first. On the map, you then need to draw three circles, centered at each of the routers. The size of the circles is found in the case brief. To solve the first clue, you will need to triangulate the circles, which means to determine where all three circles intersect. At this point of intersection, you will identify the presumed location of the suspect. To find the next clue, you will need to click the link to that location below. Embedded in that link you will find clue #2.

From here, you will proceed to identify the maps and triangulate the information you will need to pursue the suspect until apprehended!
