Taking Attendance

Regardless of whether you are using Moodle or MyWLC, faculty are asked to record their attendance using the ATTENDANCE button which can be found within MyWLC. The PDF and video below demonstrate how to navigate to this area and record the attendance. The administration is asking that you record the attendance each class period up until the Add / Drop period has passed and then record it once a week afterwards. This should help not only with mistakes in registration, but also identify at-risk students for retention purposes.

Creative Ways to Take Class Attendance

  • At the end of the class, give students a notecard where they list their name and either a question they still have or an insight they gained from the class.
  • Pass a sheet around the room with their names in alphabetical order. Have them sign next to their name. (Take a headcount to verify the number in attendance.)
  • Assign a student to take attendance.
  • Write their name on a white board as they walk in the classroom.
  • As they enter class, have then write one insight they gained from their reading for the day from the text.
  • Collect work with names on it.
  • Give a quiz and have them put name on it.
  • Hand back graded assignments at end of class and register who didn’t pick up their work.
  • Polling software is available.
  • Scan the room while students are working in groups and make note of who is not present.
  • Old school – roll call but use creative questions or facts – instead of “here” they say their birthday or favorite color, or favorite food, or ???? (Great opportunity for relationship building, especially the first few days of the semester.)
