The "Wild Life Area" sometimes called "Surrey Square Nature Garden". An integral part of Surrey Square Park and share the status of Area of Local Ecological Interest. It is connected to the main body of the park along Albridge Street.
The Wild Hedge along the fence of the Basketball Court (aka kick-about area) along the Albridge Street. Added and tended mainly by the efforts of Julian.
The Wild Meadow added in 2010 as part of remodeling works following a successful fund raising. A field along Alvey Street turfed with specially provided wild grasses and flowers. The meadow is in need of restoration and the Park Management is at present scheduling the maintenance for the area.
Several patches of grass within the park that are mowed only once a year and provide long grass covering and flower for many insects.
A small area (works are still to be done there) of the "Peter Martin" Memorial Garden, amongst mature trees covered by ivy.
In addition the new section will provide references and latitude for all things wild in an urban environment.
The site has also a new "Species list" section (still in construction) dedicated to the recording and cataloguing of animals and plant seen in the park.
While in the process of building the site the old and not actively maintained introductory page can still be seen.
It is possible to contact to the site curator here .
I apologise for the length of time it takes to reorganise the site but remember you can always help ;-).
In November 2012 we produced a poster as a way of publicising the Friends of Surrey Square Park (FoSSP). It has an online interactive version that can be found here.
