History

2013 [ The Beginning ]

JohnRadio is on the air at 88.9, later 88.7 FM, transmitting on a $5 transmitter. We played top 40 pop hits. Both these frequencies had some interference, but it could only transmit between 88.1 and 88.9.

April 2015 - July 2017 [ The Developmental Years ]

I upgraded to our current model transmitter, maxing out at 0.2 watts. We play classic rock, and not just hits! Later in 2017, we expanded to oldies and radio theater. We were transmitting on 90.5FM.

July 2017- June 2018 [ The New Beginning ]

Our antenna system is upgraded, and our frequency is locked in to 97.7FM. Our signal finally reaches all my friends houses in the neighborhood, and my high school. Finally, we find our niche and stick to it - classic country and tropical rock.

June 2018- September 2019 [ The Refinement Era ]

Our station switches to 87.9FM, which can be picked up by most radios but isn't used by any stations. Our old transmitter breaks as I try to improve the power supply to reduce background noise. New transmitter (same model) is purchased. Our advertisements are switched to a consistent 1940s-1960s "Norman Rockwell" impressionist theme.

September 2019 - December 2019 [ The MSOE Era ]

In September of 2019, WJEB 87.9FM becomes WMLH 101.9FM. We're transmitting out of my college dorm, MLH 1019. The name and frequency lined up super well, and it's a hit on campus. Thank you, residents of Vernon Hills, for your love of WJEB!

On September 29th, our frequency is switched to 101.5FM because of interference on 101.9FM limiting our range. The WMLH branding doesn't make as much sense when the frequency doesn't line up with our room number, so we go back to WJEB.

December 14, 2019 - Present [ The Discord Era ]

WJEB switched to being run by a Discord server and bot. Special programming is still tapped in to the server by John, but it is largely run by our Discord bot. The playlist has only grown since the switch, and we still transmit on 101.5FM.
