My doctoral and post-doctoral research has focused largely on contemporary Egypt, specifically the Egyptian's state's "neglectful rule" of the national capital Cairo.

The original thesis remains the most comprehensive and detailed treatment of the topic. The post-2007 book chapters and articles provide updated and more focused accounts of some of the project's key themes. The IJURR article, for example, is a revised version of Chapter 5.
