If you want a high-efficiency oil filter built for synthetic oils and long highway runs on your Harley Davidson, choose Wix 57348; if you need a precision-engineered aluminum connecting rod bearing set designed for nodular iron crankshafts in a performance rebuild, choose Clevite 77 CB-663A(8.
These two parts serve entirely different critical functions within an engine bay, yet they are often confused by DIYers searching for "replacement parts." One keeps the lubrication system clean to prevent wear, while the other is a foundational structural component that manages friction between the piston and the crankshaft. You cannot swap them, nor should you try. The decision here isn't about which brand has better marketing or who offers a flashier box; it is strictly about matching the correct internal component to your specific mechanical requirement. Whether you are tackling a routine maintenance interval on a cruiser or rebuilding a high-stress engine block, selecting the wrong spec sheet item will lead to failure. This guide cuts through the noise to help you make the right call based purely on what these components are engineered to do.
• Wix 57348: Its biggest strength is capturing microscopic dirt with 99% efficiency to protect engine internals during extreme driving; its trade-off is that it is a consumable maintenance item, not a structural rebuild part.
• Clevite 77 CB-663A(8): Its biggest strength is providing a hardened aluminum surface for optimal journal interaction and consistent precision bore diameters; its trade-off is that it is a specialized replacement requiring specific crankshaft compatibility (nodular iron).
• Who each pick is for: The Wix is for the rider doing regular oil changes on a Harley; the Clevite is for the mechanic or enthusiast performing a major bottom-end engine overhaul.
The Wix 57348 is a dedicated oil filter replacement engineered specifically for the demands of modern synthetic and high-mileage oils. If you own a Harley Davidson motorcycle, this unit is designed to handle the thermal and mechanical stress of normal to extreme driving conditions. I am looking at the data, and it clearly states this filter is built to withstand scenarios like towing heavy loads, navigating stop-and-go traffic with long idle periods, and enduring long highway runs. These are not abstract claims; they describe the real-world environments where an engine generates significant heat and requires constant filtration to survive.
The core of its value proposition lies in its filtration media. The advanced blended media captures microscopic particles with 99% efficiency at 26 microns. While that sounds technical, the practical implication for a DIY repair is simple: it stops fine debris from circulating through your oil galleries. This level of filtration helps extend the life of the engine and maintains peak performance over time. Furthermore, the filter features a silicone anti-drainback valve. This design choice ensures that when you shut off the engine, the oil stays inside the filter rather than draining back into the pan, effectively preventing dry starts. A dry start can cause immediate wear on bearings and camshafts, so this feature is a critical safety net for any rider who lets their bike sit for days or weeks.

In terms of longevity, the Wix 57348 meets or exceeds Original Equipment (OE) standards and is rated for extended service life up to 15,000 miles. This makes it a robust choice for riders who prioritize longer intervals between changes without sacrificing protection. However, you must be careful about fitment. The manufacturer explicitly notes that you need to verify vehicle fitment using a part finder before purchasing. While the dimensions are listed as roughly 3.6 x 3.1 x 3.1 inches, physical compatibility varies by model year and specific engine configuration. This filter is ideal for anyone wanting to maintain their current engine health with minimal effort, but it is useless if you are trying to replace a worn-out rod bearing. It is a maintenance piece, not a restoration piece.
On the other side of the spectrum sits the Clevite 77 CB-663A(8), which is not an oil filter but an engine connecting rod bearing set. This is a heavy-duty component used when an engine is being rebuilt or when existing bearings have failed. The product description identifies these as the highest quality replacement aluminum engine bearings available, setting a standard for bimetal construction. Unlike the Wix, which filters the oil, this part creates the physical interface between the connecting rod and the crankshaft. Its primary job is to manage the friction and load transfer during combustion strokes.
The engineering behind this bearing focuses on material hardness and surface finish. It utilizes a relatively harder aluminum alloy that wears well and interacts closely with journal surfaces to provide strength. This is crucial for high-performance applications where the forces acting on the rod are immense. The set is manufactured with 100% bored inside diameters, a process that guarantees optimum surface characteristics and consistent precision. In a DIY repair context, consistency is everything; a slight variance in diameter can lead to uneven wear, noise, or catastrophic failure. Because of this precision manufacturing, the Clevite 77 CB-663A(8) is recommended specifically for use with nodular iron crankshafts. If your engine block does not have a nodular iron crank, this bearing might not be the correct match, regardless of how high-quality the aluminum is.
This component is designed to meet or exceed OE specifications, ensuring that after installation, the engine operates within factory tolerances. This part is for the serious DIYer or professional mechanic who is tearing down an engine to replace worn internals. It is not a quick fix for an oil leak or a check-engine light; it is a fundamental rebuild part. If you are looking to refresh your engine's bottom end with materials that offer superior durability against journal wear, this is the specification you need to follow.
Choosing between these two comes down to identifying exactly what stage of engine care you are currently addressing. You are either maintaining the fluid system or replacing the moving hardware.
• Best for routine oil changes → Wix 57348: If you just need to change the oil on your Harley to keep the engine running smoothly, this is the only logical choice.
• Best for engine rebuilds → Clevite 77 CB-663A(8): If you are taking the engine apart to replace worn rods or bearings, this is the necessary component.
• Best for synthetic oil protection → Wix 57348: Only the Wix is designed to handle the specific flow and chemical properties of synthetic oils in conjunction with high-mileage engines.
• Best for journal surface interaction → Clevite 77 CB-663A(8): Only the Clevite provides the aluminum alloy surface required to interact with the crankshaft journals for strength.
• Best for preventing dry starts → Wix 57348: The silicone anti-drainback valve is a unique feature of the Wix that protects the engine during startup; the Clevite does not perform this function.
• Best for nodular iron compatibility → Clevite 77 CB-663A(8): This bearing is specifically tuned for nodular iron crankshafts; the Wix has no such mechanical interface requirements.
• Best for extended mileage intervals → Wix 57348: Rated for up to 15,000 miles, the Wix is built to last longer between changes than many competitors.
• Best for precision bore consistency → Clevite 77 CB-663A(8): The 100% bored inside diameters ensure the bearing fits perfectly every time, a critical factor for engine longevity.
I recommend the Wix 57348 for the vast majority of riders who simply need to keep their motorcycles running reliably without performing major mechanical surgery. It is a straightforward, effective solution for maintaining engine health through oil filtration, especially given the 99% dirt trapping efficiency and the anti-drainback valve that prevents dry starts. For the average DIY repair focused on scheduled maintenance, this is the clear winner because it addresses the most common wear point: dirty oil.
However, if your project involves a complete engine teardown due to knocking noises or low compression, the Wix is irrelevant. In that scenario, I would choose the Clevite 77 CB-663A(8) without hesitation. The precision boring and aluminum alloy composition are essential for rebuilding a high-stress engine. Ultimately, the choice depends entirely on whether you are changing the oil or rebuilding the engine, but for general DIY repairs on a Harley, the Wix 57348 is the tool that solves the problem most owners face.
No, compatibility varies by model year and engine type. You must verify fitment using a part finder before purchasing to ensure it matches your specific vehicle.
