How We Research
We compare products from their published specs and features; the verdicts below are our independent editorial opinions.
If you want all-day open-ear comfort, situational awareness and marathon battery life, choose WIVTAK Clip-On Earbuds Open; if you need an in-ear pair with a faster charge, higher single-charge music time and the broadest device compatibility list, choose FiveBox Earbuds.
• WIVTAK Clip-On Earbuds Open — biggest strength: an open-ear C-clip design with skin-friendly silicone hooks and featherlight per-side weight, plus a charging case rated for roughly 50 hours of total playtime.
• WIVTAK Clip-On Earbuds Open — biggest trade-off: open-ear means you keep hearing the world around you, so if you want to shut out traffic or a noisy office, this is the wrong tool by design.
• FiveBox Earbuds — biggest strength: a conventional in-ear fit that seals the canal, with a 7-hour single-charge music rating, a 1.5-hour charge time and a compatibility list that runs from iPhone 7 all the way to iPhone 17 models, Samsung Galaxy S and Z series, Google Pixel and more.
• FiveBox Earbuds — biggest trade-off: in-ear means in-ear. You get isolation and stronger perceived bass, but you also get the plugged-up feeling open-ear buyers are trying to escape.
• Who each pick is for: WIVTAK for runners, cyclists, commuters and long-shift listeners who want their ears open and the case doing the heavy lifting; FiveBox for people who want a normal in-ear bud that just works with whatever phone they own.
The WIVTAK Clip-On Earbuds Open (model L3A) are built around one idea: never put anything inside your ear canal. The ear hook is wrapped in soft silicone and shaped as a C-style clip that hugs the outer ear, with each side weighing only a few grams. No pressure, no stuffiness, no "take them out for five minutes" breaks. If you've ever pulled standard buds out after two hours because your ears felt packed, that's the exact problem this design exists to solve.
What it does best is stay aware and stay put. Because nothing blocks the canal, you hear ambient sound while your audio plays — useful on a bike, on a busy sidewalk, or in an office where someone might actually need your attention. The IPX5 rating with nano-coating handles sweat, light rain and splashes, so warm-up to cool-down workouts aren't a concern. On the call side, four HD microphones with ENC environmental noise reduction work on the person hearing you, not on you: wind, traffic and crowd noise get trimmed on your caller's end while your voice stays clear. Be honest about that distinction — it's how open-ear ENC is supposed to work, and WIVTAK's own guidance says as much. Sound is tunable too, with Bass, Music and Hi-Fi EQ profiles switched by tapping either earbud four times, so you're not stuck with one voicing.
Battery is the headline. A single charge is rated around 6 hours, and the case extends total playtime to roughly 50 hours, with a smart digital display that stays dark when idle and lights up with a numeric battery readout when you open the lid. Charging takes about 2 hours. Bluetooth 5.4, touch controls, ABS construction in Stellar Black, and a 2-year manufacturer warranty round it out.
Buy it if you want open-ear awareness, all-day light comfort, serious total battery life and a sports-ready fit. Skip it if you fly a lot, work in loud open offices, or want the sealed-in, bass-forward feel of a traditional in-ear bud — this design deliberately won't give you that.
The FiveBox Earbuds (model S42) go the opposite direction and do it well. These are ergonomic in-ear buds in white, made from lightweight plastic and silicone, designed to sit comfortably for long stretches — the kind of fit you can wear through a workday, a walk, a hike, a gaming session or a nap without thinking about them. The seal is the point: in-ear placement is what gives you that fuller, more enclosed listening experience.
Battery numbers are straightforward and respectable: about 7 hours of music playback, 5 hours of talk time, and a quick 1.5-hour recharge, with a power display on the case so you know where you stand. Bluetooth 5.3 handles the connection, and a built-in intelligent DAC chip is there to keep the audio clean from your source — the pitch being no buzzing or odd artifacts. A larger speaker driver is the reason given for the strong bass, clear mids and bright treble, which is exactly the tuning most people expect from an everyday in-ear bud.
Where FiveBox really separates itself is compatibility. The list is enormous: iPhone 17e, 17, 17 Pro Max, 17 Pro, 17 Air, 16e, 16 series, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, SE, XR, X, XS, XS Max, 8 and 7 families; Samsung Galaxy S25 through S20, Note 20 and 10, Z Fold and Z Flip 4 through 7; Google Pixel 9 down to 3 XL; plus tablets, laptops and other Bluetooth devices. If you own something with Bluetooth, chances are it's covered. You get one pack of earbuds and a 1-year warranty.
Buy it if you want a familiar in-ear bud, quick charging, solid single-charge runtime and near-universal device pairing. Skip it if you need to hear your surroundings for safety, hate the sealed-canal sensation, or you're specifically shopping for a clip-on open-ear design.
• Best for ear comfort over long sessions → WIVTAK Clip-On Earbuds Open. A few grams per side, silicone-wrapped C-clip hooks and zero canal pressure versus a standard in-ear seal.
• Best for total battery life → WIVTAK Clip-On Earbuds Open. Roughly 50 hours of total playtime from the case dwarfs what a 7-hour bud plus case can realistically deliver in the same role.
• Best for a single uninterrupted listening stretch → FiveBox Earbuds. About 7 hours of music time on one charge beats WIVTAK's roughly 6-hour single-charge rating.
• Best for fast top-ups → FiveBox Earbuds. About 1.5 hours to charge versus roughly 2 hours.
• Best for safety and awareness → WIVTAK Clip-On Earbuds Open. Open-ear means traffic, announcements and coworkers still reach you.
• Best for isolation and fuller bass → FiveBox Earbuds. The in-ear seal plus the larger driver is the setup that gives you that sound.
• Best for call clarity in noisy places → WIVTAK Clip-On Earbuds Open. Four HD mics with ENC cut wind and crowd noise for the person on the other end. FiveBox doesn't list mic or noise-reduction specs, so don't assume parity here.
• Best for device compatibility → FiveBox Earbuds. Its compatibility list is exhaustive; WIVTAK documents Bluetooth 5.4 but no equivalent device roster.
• Best for sweaty workouts and light rain → WIVTAK Clip-On Earbuds Open. IPX5 with nano-coating is an explicit rating. FiveBox lists none.
• Best for sound customization → WIVTAK Clip-On Earbuds Open. Three EQ modes (Bass, Music, Hi-Fi) switchable with four taps.
• Best warranty coverage → WIVTAK Clip-On Earbuds Open. 2 years versus FiveBox's 1 year.
I'd buy the WIVTAK Clip-On Earbuds Open. In my opinion, it solves a more interesting problem: it lets you wear earbuds for a full day without your ears complaining, keeps you aware of what's around you, survives sweat and rain, and leans on a case rated for around 50 hours so charging is a weekly chore rather than a daily one. The 2-year warranty and the three EQ modes sweeten it. The FiveBox Earbuds are the safer, more familiar pick — great compatibility, quicker charging, slightly longer single-charge music time — but that's a category full of lookalikes. If you already know you want an in-ear bud and you own an older iPhone or an Android phone you want covered, FiveBox is a perfectly sound choice. Just check the current price on Amazon for both before you commit, since that's the one variable I can't weigh for you.
For running, yes, in my opinion. The open-ear clip keeps your ears clear of traffic and ambient sound, the IPX5 rating covers sweat and light rain, and the lightweight hook design is made to stay put. FiveBox is an in-ear design with no listed water resistance.
Yes, and that's arguably their strongest selling point. The listed compatibility covers iPhone 7 through iPhone 17-series models, Samsung Galaxy S20 through S25, Note 20 and 10, Z Fold and Z Flip 4 through 7, Google Pixel 3 XL through 9, plus tablets and laptops.
About 6 hours per charge, extending to roughly 50 hours of total playtime with the charging case. A full charge takes about 2 hours. FiveBox lists about 7 hours of music time, 5 hours of talk time and a 1.5-hour charge.
That depends on what you're optimizing for. WIVTAK gives you open-ear design, IPX5, four-mic ENC calling, three EQ modes, a 50-hour case and a 2-year warranty; FiveBox gives you broader compatibility, faster charging and slightly longer single-charge playback with a 1-year warranty. Check the current price on Amazon for each before deciding.
