Over the next 15 years, 65% of the global population will be living in cities. Nowadays, cities are not only living spaces but also engines of innovation, prosperity and economic growth. Diverse initiatives have been focusing on monitoring and integrating the diverse transportations means, models for infrastructure maintenance and security while maximizing services to its citizens. In all these initiatives, the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are becoming a fundamental component.
The WITS workshop aims to bring together researchers and experts, to present and discuss current implementations of intelligent transportation systems, analyze the challenges that must be overcomed in these solutions and propose new approaches that can be applied in future projects.
Many latin american countries had applied different strategies for implementing ITS. Countries such as Peru and Paraguay are performing nation-wide projects to define a common ITS architecture. Other countires have implemented diverse ITS solutions by private initiatives instead a national long-term strategy . In this keynote, Klaus will present a brief description of some of ITS initiatives and projects and in Latin America and will provide his perspective on the possibilities of similar projects in Colombia.
The WITS workshop comprises three activities: (1) A keynote of Klaus Banse, presenting the experience of many Latin American countries implementing nation-wide initiatives for ITS, (2) the presentation of research papers and (3) a final general discussion on the challenges and opportunities to implement ITS solutions in Colombia.
