Withyhays is a small, breeding/showing hobby rabbitry located near Glastonbury, Somerset, and is named after a house I lived in as a child, in a village nearby. My father bought a ruined house which had once been School Rooms and then a Chapel, but which had no name. Once it had been rebuilt and renovated, my mother looked at old maps of the village and discovered the field opposite was named Withy Hays, meaning 'a field where withies are grown.' She chose this name, which dates back to Mediæval times, for our cottage.
It was while living there that I started keeping rabbits, and began showing them in 1976 when I was thirteen years old. When coming back to rabbits for a third time in 2014, I chose this name - a big part of my family's history - for my rabbit stud, registered with the British Rabbit Council.
Henna, a young Belgian Hare, 2004
My first rabbits were Dutch crosses, but after reading some rabbit books and realising how many beautiful breeds existed, I fell in love with photos of Belgian Hares. At the Bath & West agricultural Show the following year, a breeder agreed to sell me a young Belgian Hare doe.
My first show was Somerset & Dorset Fanciers' Society's Young Stock Show, held in Blandford, Dorset, in July 1976, where "Nutmeg" was placed third in her class.
As well as Belgian Hares, I also had Orange Rex but my curiosity was piqued by the fascinating Harlequin breed. In 1977 I acquired a pair of Magpie does from the top breeder, Keith Bee in Nottinghamshire, and a buck the following year. A few years later I also had Blue Harlequins from Molly Webb. They then led me to the Tri-Colour Dutch breed in 1979. My love for the Harlequin pattern and its genetics has never died.
