WiSE Lab Founder and Chief Director, Prof. Sean Kwon also mentions that he heartfully appreciates the collaboration with and the advice of Prof. Andreas Molisch at the University of Southern California.
Paul joined WiSE Lab when he was a junior student in 2018, and one of the 1st generation students in WiSE Lab. Recently, he has had talks, presentations and invited lectures for CSULB undergraduate and graduate students. He has also been helping WiSE Lab students and projects.
The next-generation wireless communication system will provide global access to information and sharing of data for numerous user equipments (UEs) and a variety of applications. Interference measurement plays an important role to assist link-adaptation and scheduling in 5th generation new radio (5G NR) systems.
In 5G NR systems, transmit and receive beamforming can be used at both the Transmission Reception Point (TRP) side and the user equipment (UE) side . The TRP and UE maintain several best TRP and UE beams for both the communication and measurement. Best beams are determined based on the channel state information (CSI), and 5G standards use channel quality information (CQI) as part of CSI. Interference measurement is an important component in extimating CQI.
This patent directly contributed to state-of-the-art commercial wireless communication standards.
One of the key features in Wireless Communication is utlizing a variety of Beamforming schemes and managing the transmit and receive beams.
One of the granted patents takes into account beam management reference signals for interference measurement and feedback in Multi-User MIMO systems.
Other patents of Professor Sean Kwon in Next-generation Wireless Communication are listed in the following links (Google Patents).
Ph.D student, Son Doan under the co-advising of professor Sean Kwon has received the Best Paper Award in IEEE Green Energy and Smart System Conference 2019. The research topic is multi-polarization multi-input multi-output (MP-MIMO) system taking into account the practical scenario of the discrete polarization state.
Dr. Son Doan also completed his Ph.D defense in this Spring 2020 semester, and have been working at Raytheon. WiSE Lab is looking forward to future collaboration with him and his colleagues!
< First place Award - Beamforming >
< Third place Award - OFDM >
Founder and Chief Director of WiSE Lab, Professor Sean Kwon has concentrated tremendous efforts on pursuing strengthening the research capability of undergraduate students in his classes since 2017. As a successful results, one project team won First Place Award and two more project teams were among the three nominated to Second and Third Place Awards, where one team won Third Place Award. The Panel of Judges consisted of three ADC members from Boeing, Aerospace Corporation, and Southern California Edison along with three CSULB Faculty. Professor Sean Kwon said, "It is my earnest pleasure advising our wonderful CSULB students, supervising interesting projects, observing significant increase of students' interests and passion for Wireless Communications, and finally being together with my students in the memorable moments."
WiSE Lab has performed the state-of-the-art research focusing on the next-generation wireless communication systems, standards, and related research fields. We also pursue interdisciplinary research between several research areas such as green communications, smart systems, and body area network for health-care devices and wearable computing for the battle field and common lives as well. This achievement of the Best Paper Award shows the active research work of WiSE Lab.
Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that the first author, Paul Oh, is an undergraduate student researcher planning to continue his study/research in the master's program of Calfornia State University - Long Beach, at WiSE Lab under the advising of Chief Director, Professor Sean Kwon.
WiSE Lab emphasizes the interactive training and research collaboration between Chief Director and WiSE student researschers.
