"Finished” gun dogs are not made in the training fields in the spring and summer, the foundation for a finished gun dog and Prized Utility Test performance is made before the snow melts!
This course is generally for dogs and handlers that are past their first hunting season and/or Natural Ability Test, and want to learn the concepts and methods to work towards becoming a “finished” gun dog team. This course is highly recommended for any member pursuing testing beyond Natural Ability and/or working towards a hunting dog that is steady to wing, shot, and fall.
The best results will be obtained by attendees who are willing to take the skills and drills they learn from this course and apply them at home in between weekly sessions. We will help you learn how to train your own dog, but we will NOT train your dog for you.
Training concepts covered will include:
How dogs think and learn – rewards, pressure, corrections and withholding
Why and how to use a pinch/prong collar
Heeling – loose leash and off leash
Static - WHOA, steadiness, sit, down, stand
The 3 D's - Duration, Distance and out-of-sight, Distractions including birds
Recall
Introduction to retrieving, positive and forced
E-collar tips - do’s and don’ts!
Engagement with your dog, how to get it and keep it for life
Natural Ability, Gun Dog, and Utility Test expectations and handling tips
