Hunting and Non-Hunting/Companion Dogs
A well-trained dog makes for a more enjoyable pet and a better bond between the pet and the owner.
The goal of this obedience class is to train the owner/handler to train their dog effectively. By the end of the class, your dog will heel at your side off leash, stay where it is told in the position it is told and come when called. The best results will be obtained by attendees who are willing to take the skills and drills they learn from this course and apply them at home in between weekly sessions. We will help you learn how to train your own dog, but we will NOT train your dog for you.
If you have a hunting dog, there is a modified version of this class specifically for those dogs. If you are interested in that class please send an email to info@northwoodsnavhda.org.
This course is for dogs that are 6 months or older and handlers 16 years or older that want to have a well-behaved companion dog.
Training concepts covered will include:
How dogs think and learn – rewards, pressure, corrections and withholding
Why and how to use a pinch/prong collar
Heeling – loose leash and off leash
Steadiness - sit, down, stand – duration, distance and out-of-sight
Recall
Introduction to retrieving, positive and forced
E-collar tips - do’s and don’ts!
Engagement with your dogs, how to get it and keep it for life
There will be alternating sessions each night; companion dog (non-hunting dog) focused sessions and hunting dog focused sessions. The LLBO is partnering with Northwoods North (NAVHDA) who will be providing trainers to train handlers to train their dogs.
