1 Peter 5:8-11
If you've ever watched a nature documentary, you've probably seen a lion hunting its prey. A lion doesn't usually charge into the middle of a healthy herd. It watches. It waits. It looks for an opportunity.
Often, the easiest target is the animal that has become separated from the herd, the one that has wandered away, fallen behind, or become distracted.
Peter uses that same picture to describe our enemy: “Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
That's a sobering description. Satan isn't just trying to distract you. He's trying to destroy you.
Like a lion stalking its prey, he looks for moments when we're vulnerable—discouraged, isolated, exhausted, distracted, or spiritually careless.
That's why Peter tells us to “be sober-minded” and “be watchful.”
You don't have to live afraid of the lion. But you do need to remember that there's a lion out there.
Peter gives us four pieces of practical advice when dealing with Satan.
#1 RESIST (“Resist him”)
Peter doesn't tell us to run from Satan in fear. He tells us to resist him. Satan may tempt, accuse, discourage, or intimidate us, but we don't have to give him what he wants.
James says, “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).
You can't always stop Satan from attacking, but you can refuse to give him ground.
Say no to the temptation. Reject the lie. Choose obedience even when disobedience looks easier.
#2 STAND (“firm in your faith”)
How do we resist him? Peter says by being “firm in your faith.” We stand by holding tightly to what we know to be true about God.
That's what Jesus did when Satan tempted Him. Each time Satan attacked, Jesus answered with God's Word: “It is written.”
When Satan says, God has forgotten you, faith says, God will never leave me.
When Satan says, Giving in won't hurt anything, faith says, God's ways are always best.
We resist Satan by standing on God's truth instead of believing Satan's lies.
#3 REMEMBER (“the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world”)
Satan wants you thinking, Nobody understands. Nobody else struggles like I do. I'm all alone.
Peter says: Don't believe it. Believers around the world are fighting the same enemy and experiencing temptation, discouragement, opposition, and suffering.
That's one reason we need each other. When the lion is prowling, don't separate yourself from the herd.
Stay connected. Talk to someone. Pray with someone. Let other believers help you stand.
#4 TRUST (“the God of all grace… will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you”)
Finally, Peter reminds us how the battle ends. Suffering isn't forever. Satan doesn't get the last word. God does.
After we have “suffered a little while,” God Himself will restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish us.
Don't miss the contrast: Satan is trying to devour you. God is working to restore, strengthen, and establish you.
So keep resisting. Keep standing. Remember you're not alone. And above all, keep trusting the God who has already promised how the story ends.
“To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.”
