Communicable Disease

Communicable disease (CD) staff play an important role in detecting, preventing, and controlling communicable diseases in the community.



Immunization

  • WCHD provided 221 influenza vaccines to Winnebago County employees

  • According to the 2020 County Health Rankings, Winnebago's childhood immunization rate (78%) was above Wisconsin's average (72%) but lower than our neighboring counties (Calumet = 82% & Outagamie = 80%).

  • Immunization Statistics and Resources

  • Northeast Wisconsin Immunization Coalition (NEWIC) provides the community with resources such as immunization symposiums, school nurse in-services on vaccinations, and Immunization Tool Kits to physician offices. NEWIC has also done media outreach to both vaccine providers and consumers. As an advocate for vaccination, NEWIC also supports educational outreach to legislation for better immunization funding.

Harm Reduction

The LIFEPOINT Needle Exchange program is a partnership with the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin.

The purpose of LIFEPOINT is to reduce the transmission of HIV and Hepatitis C and other potential harms associated with injection drug use.

Sexually Transmitted Infection Rates in Winnebago County

STI rates continue to be an issue in Winnebago County. The Winnebago County Health Department partners with local high schools and post secondary education facilities to provide prevention education to a targeted audience.

Tuberculosis (TB)

CD staff is responsible for for triaging referrals of latent TB infection, sputum collection for people with active and suspect TB disease, Directly Observed Therapy (video and in person), contact investigations and phlebotomies for TB screening. The team monitored 59 cases in 2020; all of these were LTBI or latent cases.
