Recently I came across a YouTube channel where a couple discuss the do's and don'ts of their religion. They are Orthodox Jews and among other things Sabbaht (the Sabbath) is very important to them. They have a lot of things that they don't do on their Sabbath. It's not so much that they can't do these things as it is that in reverence to the Sabbath they don't do these things. I have so much admiration and respect for them. It has made me think a lot of my own choices in respect to the Sabbath. When I was a really young child there was a song we sang at Church. The words are
Saturday is a special day, its the day we get ready for Sunday.
As a Christian my Sabbath is on Sunday. I have thought about how I prepare for my Sabbath. Unfortunately, I don't think that I do a very good job getting ready for Sunday. In this last year I have found that my Saturdays are full of tasks. I have been working part-time and going to school full-time. When Saturday comes around I usually have a pretty big list of things to do, and I also attempt to spend time with my kids and my husband on Saturday doing things that I wouldn't do on Sunday. Sometimes our Saturday is filled by other people with birthday parties, wedding receptions, or service projects. Sometimes my kids have school or church activities. Although I want to spend the day preparing for the Sabbath, I find myself recovering from the week and struggling to just do one or two things on my very long to do list. So how do I improve my Sabbath worship and what can I do to make sure that when I wake up on Sunday morning I am ready for Sunday? What does that look like? What can I change?
